Um, no it wasn't supposed to end at X4, X5 was intended to be the ending from the start
X2 and 3 prophesized the events of X5 (at least, X and zero having to fight) so ending it at 4 wouldn't have made sense and would have been a massive blue balls


and nothing was retconned in X6 idk what you're talking about
