Quote:those of you who Stairway to Heaven sucks either haven't listened to it all the way through (because the best part is after the second half) or are just trollingI am being completely serious and I have listened to it all the way through
it just
is not very good
through, in fact I will again right now:
0:20 not too much going on, acoustic guitar riff with a kind of southern/folk tinge to it and warm synths, later being replaced by flutes.
0:56 vocals come in. nothing to comment, his vocals are kind of bland - like they're trying to be heart-felt and mellow but they just come off as being "there".
2:00 woah, a change in the riff. still not even remotely interesting though.
2:19 generic guitar strum, this basically continues for a while
4:00 starting to build up. getting a little better, but I ughed at the "oh oh oh oh oh"
4:50 well its good that it makes you wonder, but you don't have to keep repeating yourself~
the drums feel don't really seem to fit very well.
6:00 the drums are much better now, but the guitar solo isn't that good!
6:38 the guitar in the background is good enough, too bad it has to be tarnished by the utterly mediocre solo.
6:44 I can almost feel something here. But it's kind of blue-balled, if you get what I mean!
7:20 plant is kind of annoying
oh
its over
okay, well now I feel even more blueballed, it was kind of doing something there and building up and then it just ended ~
All of these riffs are pretty generic and there isn't a single thing memorable about this song
I've already forgotten what the riffs sounded like

I don't even like the song but I still cringe at people who think they can declare things objectively bad based on their own opinions of music and apparent knowledge.

Then with this logic, is it not incorrect to say that people who declare things objectively good based on their own opinions of music and apparent knowledge are wrong?

Yes, that's true. It's not up to you whether something is (objectively) bad or good, it's likely up to either the masses or the experts. However, the difference between saying it's objectively good or bad, is that most of the arguments here are about succesful bands, and that likely puts them at a stage of objectively good (as can be seen by their success, mass appeal, etc.) and regardless of whether or not one person claims they are bad.
There are of course exceptions, when bad things become popular, but even those can probably be argued.
'Twilight', for example. Objectively BADLY written, however subjectively the story is good and appeals to a lot of people.
I'm referring to conversations that go as such:
Participant 1: I like *band*.
Participant 2: *band* is bad.
Participant 1: That's your opinion.
Participant 2: No, I have come to the conclusion that *band* is bad, as I have used my knowledge of music to determine such.
Participant 1: But I have come to the conclusion that *band* is good, as I have used my knowledge of music to determine such.
It goes in circles, and ultimately ends up just as SUBJECTIVE as it was before you brang the whole objective bullshit into it.
At the end of the day, you not having a taste for something does not make it bad, if it appeals to other people.
If it doesn't appeal to anyone, well then you can probably safely say it's objectively bad.

And I'm not talking about cult hits, because those actually have a dedicated fanbase, of which most usually know what they're talking about in that area.
And of course the people who like things because they're bad.
