ff12 was a great game, what the fuck are you talking about.
anyway
most FF games are so different they can hardly be considered the same series, despite naming conventions
i'm doing a dry run of every game in the series up until seven, and i like 1 and 4 a lot so far.
2 is absolutely retarded, but firion seems like a cool bro.

I've never bothered to go past the first village in FF2 because of the retarded battle/level system. Even in the "fixed" remakes, it's still stupid.
Maybe if they retool the entire battle system back to the traditional style in a future remake, I'll play it.
I've heard a lot of people say that they like FF4 the best, and while it isn't bad, from what I've played of it so far, it's outclassed in every way possible by FF6.
Note that I've never beaten a final fantasy game (or gotten past the "disc-one" equivalents in any game.)
I'm the furthest in 6 (I think somewhere near halfway through the game, I dunno. The world hasn't ended yet.)
I got to the second world in 5.
The rest I'm so close to the beginning that I might as well not have started at all, haha

None of the games, in my opinion, are really HORRIBLE games, but in the spectrum of Final Fantasy games, I can easily consider some to be horrible when compared to another. I've played all of them except 3 and 11, I've never beaten 2 or 8 or 12, and my personal favorites in the series were 6 and 9.
I'm sure I can get a lot of people to agree with me that 6 was an awesome game, even with all its glitches (I didn't even notice, I found out about said glitches many years later). It was something about the wide variety of characters and the humor mixed with serious elements, and the steam-punk style Magitek concepts. Plus it had an awesome "bigger boss" theme.
9 I'm sure I'd have a lot less support saying that it's a fun game, but it really is awesome. It returned to a lot of classic FF elements in a 3D field, and I think it was hailed either by the fans or by one of the game's creators as the last game in the series with a classic style (save remakes I guess). Whereas I felt that the cast of 8 had all the emotion of a 40 year old playing with Barbie dolls, 9 had a colorful cast with a wide variety of personalities and emotions... I guess that might be because I like cartoons. xD But it also had awesome action scenes, like the scene where they escape from Black Waltz.
Also, I think I like those two games a lot because I didn't feel utterly confused by what was happening... 7 and 8 had this tendency of making all these plot elements that just puzzle you, but instead of fitting all the pieces together bit by bit, they just drop everything on your lap all at once in some scene.

square tends to cover everything on over produced CG movies as if it was mayonaise yes

people who say the characters in 8 have no personality must not have been playing the right game or something. maybe they put in 'dragon quest' accidentally.
the cast is emotionally stunted because most of them are orphans/child soldiers that grew up in seclusion. if anything, 8 is a deconstruction of standard RPG elements. 90% of the shit that happens in 8 that's terrible is because the cast isn't mentally or emotionally mature enough to deal with it.

The Only really bad ff game is mystic quest. Personally, I think the game looks good but they made Cid and his assistant way too metro.

The good thing on Final Fantasy is all games are different. I mean, of course I got my personal favorites, and the ones I really loathe, but they are different, and so far and wide between each other that if you don't like it you can just wait for the next one. It's not like, for example, Phantasy Star that every game got a certain continuity, so if you don't like one of them, you won't like any of the others.
Also, being a famous brand, it sure will sell, and they can use the money for more interesting projects. And they can also test new systems, like for example FFII (that WAS one heck of an experimental system. Flawed, but they tried), FFX-2, FFXII... They are so different that there's always somebody who actually liked the games that major gaming community think are bad (I know two persons who actually liked Mystic Quest!).
If you ask me, my favorites are FFVIII, FFIV, FFX and I am within the 1% of the general population who thinks FFVI is overrated and I'm tired of those FFVII fan-bitches, I can't really decide which is worse: the FFVII fans that actually played the original game or the ones who doesn't.

I do have a biased opinion about FFVI. It's the first FF game I ever owned (and beat.. I got SO CLOSE with IV), it had giant robot suits, it had what was, essentially, a villainous clown, and to top it all off, I found out about it's existence through this commercial

no you wouldn't, everybody and their grandma thinks 9 is the best out of the series

FF9 is definitely my favorite out of the PS1 era, but I don't know about the entire series. It's definitely in the top three, though.

this topic makes me want to sit down and actually FINISH FFX
god damn I'm just before the big fight with Sin (the one where you're on the airship) and I should *probably* beat it
since how much more do I have to fight after Sin?
Seymour (that fucker just won't die)
one giant-ass cave
and then the final boss of the game

Now I know three! Actually I think many people don't like Mystic Quest because it's not quite like the other FF.
If you're that far, you really should go beat up Sin.

Before getting the final boss you have the cave, Seymour, a little more cave, Sin, all of your aeons and finally the final boss (which is easier than Sin and Yunaleska IMO)
