I thought Snake was just referencing all the xXxHaRdCoRexXx Smash players who said that "SONJIC WOOD NEVAR FIT IN2 BARLW !!!!!!!!"
and I'm 100% open to Sonic going into the Mario universe and be in a game that wasn't party-oriented.

This. Forever. Sonic can save my Princess anytime just like Mario can come gather up some rings if he wants.
If they just made a really good game that involves both them working together rather them being in as a cameo later to be unlocked in the game everything would be with with the Nintendo and Sega World.
the only problem is that mario and sonic have totally different gametypes;
sure, they're both platformers and their main form of attack is jumping on things, but that's about where the similarities end.
Sonic is all about speed, hills, loops, and action.
His levels are mostly dynamic sloping levels that aren't just straightforward. (I'm talking classic sonic here, though "speed boost" sonic still fits this.)
Not to mention the special stages and chaos emeralds, as well as super sonic.
As for mario, the levels are much more straightforward, and not as hill-y or whatever, as mario isn't totally about speed.
It's generally a much slower paced game, and has more puzzle solving and platform jumping elements.
Not to mention that the powerups wouldn't really work for sonic. I suppose it could be argues that the fire flower could give him the fire shield and the star would be invincibility, but that's pretty much it. Mushrooms and mario's other powerups don't make sense for sonic, and vice versa.
That's why I always figured they'd be in a game that was different from their usual play type. One time I came up with a side scrolling beat 'em up starring the two. Come on you know you'd love it.
viper stop trying to be smart, everyone knows mario and sonic have different game types
it could still work if sega and nintendo at least try
I thought the Sonic Adventure games already taught us about being able to have different gameplay types over the same levels
Like, say, for one given level, Sonic will get the massive twisted part to complete since he could fly through it
while Mario gets the high-jumping precision platforming shortcuts of the level

Yes and the bonus levels could be like:

Oh wow, look at that we just made the ground work for a possibly great Wii exclusive imagine that. High Five anyone? Anyone?
i wouldn't highfive that. sounds like a huge excuse to do a massive fanservice rather than anything.
not to mention, how the fuck would you make sonic and mario talk eachother? the second has ever said something beyond three words?
"WOO HOO YAHOO"
"YEAH! LET'S GET EGGMAN!"
"MAMA MIA!"
thanks for the unnecesary sound effects vipershark.
Well Mario doesn't really have to talk. He never talks, even in games where there's no speech but just text. He just shouts and says "Mama Mia" and maybe a few other short phrases.
Sonic on the other hand, doesn't have to really talk either. He can talk just as much as Mario does with shouting and short phrases, which is preferable anyway.
Amy and Peach could both get kidnapped by the evil forces of Bowser and Eggman who have decided to work together by joining their armies. That's all the story you really need as far as I'm concerned. Mario and Sonic can have separate levels, maybe some levels where they work together to get past obstacles. Mario can bounce on Sonic's head to get over a locked door to the other side to unlock it so Sonic can get through, Sonic can get through a long course within a short amount of time to hit a switch that opens a door, etc.
Maybe some stages where you play as Tails/Luigi and Knuckles/Yoshi match-ups?
Well I played the Adventure mode in M&S Winter Games on the DS. Both Mario and Sonic don't speak but everyone else does.
if anything, each one's ability would let them play each stage in a diferent way, as knucles/sonic do on s3k
HUMM that might be interesting.
i just don,t get one thing.
