Holy sodding fuggle beans!
This is amazing. I loved this game actually despite it being japanese. I've been a fan of the series for a while. Excellent job.
Wow, awesome job! Must have taken you forever!
Is it safe to assume that GeGeGe is playable and the rest of the "friendlies" are NPCs? Also, can you get me a screenshot for a section icon? Awesome job! Thanks!
I upped a section icon, but if you'd rather have it with a screenshot, ok.
Actually adult Kitarou and Medama Oyaji are playables, while all the others are NPCs, yes. Nezumi Otoko is technically "neutral" since he's an enemy early on then an ally later in the game. Since he's a regular in the anime, I kept him in the "friendlies" category.
And it didn't take very long. As I said, I haven't worked in a month. My job is too slow. (
) ... Actually now that I think about it, I think it's been 2 weeks. I took a few hours break to try an MMORPG (didn't like the one I d/led) and a short break to play GeGeGe on the PSX. I slept a lot, but then had so much energy from not working that I stayed up for 32 hours straight. That was the day I played the MMORPG though, so I guess it doens't count.
But yeah. God, some of the sprites sucked to rip. Kitarou's Youkai Reactor, for one, I could have easily simplified -- make it an 8x8 pixel tile as opposed to a 4x1 tiled sprite -- but by the time I realized that, I had half of what's in his sheet ripped. >_> So I spent another hour after the three I spent ripping it reorganizing it. The pot sprite was another 3+ hour job because I had to sit there with an AVI and go frame by frame copying the jar's pieces onto a separate layer over frame AND in the same order they're drawn on the screen.
Like I said in my Ripping Project thread, they made this thing a pain to work with. And I swear they had multiple artists programming everything with little or no direction. Some sprites are oversized due to a single pixel (so anyone using these sheets will have to be careful). Sometimes extranneous pixels will be at the top, actually programmed there. Other times they move the entire sprite down a pixel so that extra pixel is at the bottom of the sprite. And then sometimes they just don't bother with the pixel at all and you're left with "open" sprites, like Yagyohsan.
I cheated a little using Visual Boy Advance so I didn't have much use for the tile viewer, but in Gashadokuro's case, it was the only way I could get his entire body. Now THAT I was kinda proud of.
That icon will work. Was I right about the playable character?
Yes, kinda. Big Kitarou and Medama Oyaji are both playable. Medama Oyaji's playable in the intro and Hakaba Kitarou follows him. The rest are NPCs that typically just stand in one spot. Nezumi Otoko is an enemy in the beginning of the game, but he's just a misguided yokai and is technically a normal NPC since he is an ally by the end of the game.
You can take your pick of Section Icons. I made two more for you. Only one is an actual screenshot. The other is an edit.
The GeGeGe Kitaro sheet is resized

Holy crap! Good eye! Must have been Photobucket's doing, as the original is 560x1216. I'll have to tweek it, it seems.
And I noticed just now Momonjiji has duplicate sprites. I tried so hard to avoid that. I must have been tired. Oh well, I'm not gonna mess with that one. But I'll see what I can do about Kitarou's sheet.
Rather than trying to dick around with Kitarou's sprite sheet -- it was still bigger than 1024pixels high even after I cut out a bunch of empty space -- I just moved it to Image Shack. They all suck, but whatever. Photobucket resizes the image. Image Shack resizes the file's name. Supposedly Image Shack doens't allow understrokes, so sorry this file name won't be as nice looking as my others.
I edited my first post with the new image link. Ok, fine. I redid five sheets total. The Kitarou one above. I reupped Kanto Yokai (it's still at Photobucket, but the file size is now 272x1024). I moved the following three sheets to ImageShack due to their "excessive size" : Backdrops, Character Scenes, and Titles

That mummy is creepy
great sheets!
Also, you can upload bigger sheets on photobucket if you go to "more options" under the upload button and click on "1 megabyte file size"

I'll try that when I upload maps. Tthey'll obviously be huge. Today was a learning experience: don't trust Photobucket, esp. when you should be asleep.
