Not a bad start, but a few things you may want to fix;
The eyes in the "Memory" style are white with black around them. Also, on the bottom, make that one pixel tall of shading since it's a flat surface... hmmm what else... Oh yeah, on the top, where the shading is darker, make that top row of color (under the outline) the lighter yellow to show that it's a flat top which would still get hit by the lightsource.
I think I fixed what you had said Chaoxys, but I didnt really understand what you had meant about the bottom, so I may or may not have fixed it right, but I did what I thought you had say, I just may not of done it right :/
Also, the eyes in the "style" are usually closer together, but thats probably more of an optional thing.
Chublock or Pikablock?
Well anyway beyond that, it looks very good.
Okay Choaxys, I think I fized the shading problem, when you had said bottom, I thought you were refering to the legs my bad...
I also moved the right his left eye in a pixel
and Andy, I was using really the older, chubby pikachu as a ref, rather the newer, slimmer one
No, you just... I don't know what you did actually. Look at the edit I made. See how the shading on the actual body, on the bottom is only 1 pixel high? Yours is 2.
Thats egg on my face, I uploaded the wrong one, Im sorry Chaoxys, I should pay a bit more attention to which file I upload...
I think I may start aninmating sooner or later
didn't really read any of the posts here so far, but the main problem i'm seeing with this
is that even though it looks like you're trying to give it depth
it still looks extremely flat
look at this:
this character has relatively the same sort of build that(at least the lower half of) pikachu has
see how much more depth it has than your sprite?
fix that
the contrast seems too high, you could change the hue of the yellow, maybe slightly desaturated?
ed:
wasn't it only that style becuse he remembers them(Mario Bros) as pixles? But anyway, alls doing good, but the tail looks flat compared to the rest of the body
Tried following C2B's example by making him wider about two or three pixels, and messed with the shading and things.
Does it look any deeper at all?
Edit
Messed with it some more, it looks a tad more in depth to me, but still not sure
perhaps a different aproach: make a bigger version and once you nailed the features, work in a smaller version.
