So I want the background to be darker, but I suck at choosing colors soo... Can anyone help?

Or you just do what they did in mega Man: black background with high contrast outlines/details. Can't get much darker than that.

As for the two choices, I dunno. On the one hand, the right side is darker, but on the other hand, the left side just feels more pleasing to my eyes, at least on an LCD monitor.

I suck at choosing colors for anything. And yeah, my light source is the left, his is from the right.
