There have been a couple of Mii related things on the DS (might have only been in Japan though) but I don't recall hearing anything about a cartridge.

didn't that one personal walking trainer game have miis? because that game had a pedometer, so the cartridge probably had an infrared thing on the top of it, maybe that's what he's talking about?

Nope, spriting will never go out of date. We still have super systems like the PS3 and the XBOX 360 and sprite games still continue to exist for those systems. That definitely won't change for this new brand of DS either. In fact, a newer gen just makes even more efficient and prettier sprite based games.

Many Consoles still use Z-sprites anyway, so I doubt 3ds will stop.
