i was just about to say that, you could get away saying that in a world of overly unique characters your protagonist's main gimmick is to

have no gimmick
You should make the protagonist bald and obese.

To mix things up and stuff.

I do like this new style direction. his face is bigger, giving him more room for expression should he need it. and hopefully more expressive sprites will help him become endearing, even if his design is standard.

as for the animation itself, he's got some arm swinging going on there. I mean, you do do that when you run, but it should be more in a back-front direction than left to right, which you've done here.

Hello, I made an edit based on what you asked on TIGS, I hope you don't mind.

That hammer guy looks like the main character with different clothes and a different hairstyle, so I tried to give him a slightly blockier face, and gave him angrier and bushier eyebrows. you now, to exaggerate his features a bit.
I also fixed the arm holding the hammer so it doesn't look like its growing out of his chin.
And I tried to add a bit of depth to their eyes by adding a white pixel next to it.

Yeah a bit too saturated, adn the new style seems much better, the running animation looks awkward, do to the way the arms move
