I've made an edit of your latest sprite.

I've increased contrast, now different shades are more discernible, I think.

I tried to re-position the sword, and also gave it a hand. Looking at it now, that
could be all thats missing from yours.

All that said, this particular sprite has a strong resemblance to Mega Man, From Mega Man Legends.
To be honest nearly all of your sprites seem to follow Mega Man influence. I know this was stated
earlier in the thread, but you've also stated that you have acknowledged this, and would like to develop
your own style. I can not support this enough. Your work isn't bad, but It definitely looks like Mega Man
sprites, whether you want them to or not.

I'd try some sprites without selout, which you seem very keen on using. I'd also try to shy away from the
giant mega man boots nearly every recent character of yours seems to have some version of.

TL:DR - More contrast needed, give sword hand a hand, and try something not in a Mega Man style.

I hope I don't come of as preachy, If I do I apologize.
Well if you really want to get more away megaman styles its not just megaman boots you need to veer away from.
You are also posing them like megamans, exaggerating proportions like megamans, and picking colors for them like megamans.
(Actually the earlier version girl versions seems to take her colors and shading from Sonic sprites, so there's something to think about)

It's alright to take a few influences with you as you develop your own style, but with too many influences at one time, even if you fix one thing, it will still look like a megaman sprite.

A few tips to get you off megaman style. Nearly every megaman humaniod uses the same feet positioning and often the similiar leg positions in their idles. Megaman feet tend to have one foot facing the viewer (or pointed slightly back) and the other in forward profile, while in real life feet can point forward more. Mix up the exaggrations on the features a bit, how proportions are different from real life in a sprite is a big part of what makes a style a style. Megamans tend to have bigger than needed lower legs, feet, and lower arms and hands, plus a bigger head. Changing to a leg pose NOT found (or commonly) in megaman would also go a long way towards demegamanifying a sprite.
Expect a full revision soon, I know most of these problems already but it was 2 AM when I posted that, expect the newer one to be posted later.

The new one is the revised design (mostly armor, but a major wip and still needs work). Any ideas how to make him less "Mega Man"?
He looks even more like Megaman, actually.
I understand your pain. We've probably both been doing Megaman for so long its hard to get away from.

You gotta give him more human shaped legs/boots, and right now, he's got the exact same shape as MMZ Zero.

I think you actually have a serious problem.
Okay maybe i'm exaggerating a little bit, but you get my point, right?
Yeh, that will be my first priority of the challenge. First do away with the Mega Man poportions, then experiment with design (by looking for outside inspiration) as domobot said.

this is basically what you need to do

I've already explained the theory stuff countless times on MSN so you should know this already
Okay, so now I'm gonna have to try this alternative when making sprites (therefore dropping the old method altogether, as you all witnessed here). Oy, this challenge is gonna be harder than I thought..
