koopaul and pokemon

you see it now?? again not saying your wrong but it is very koopaulish even if its not nostalgic
the difference is that koopaul was talking about the simplicity of pokemon designs, whereas i'm talking about everything that they're drastically changing

the problem here isn't "nostalgia", the problem here is that they don't know when to quit and just move onto a different franchise instead of milking one that should have died years ago

Congratulations, Boon and company. You finally realized that you can't make a 3D fighting game for shit and actually invested in a legitimate (although blatantly outdated) combo system.

Maybe your next investment should be motion capture actors that don't make every character look like they're fucking 70 years old when they animate.

Here's hoping that later videos of the game's development will prove me wrong. Which they probably won't, given the MK team's complete idiocy with their own franchise. The old dog should have been laid to bed after MK4.
Alpha Six confirmed for being the most negative person of all time.

Anyways, I saw bits of that live-action trailer and I'm still questioning on whether or not it's real, but a new 2D MK game sounds cool.

Considering that I've played a million fighting games and have had at least half an hour with every MK game known to date, I think what I have to say on the matter is completely valid :l
You may understand what makes a good video game but this is business and appealing to audience. MK cannot be relevant in the current time frame, agreed. As a side note this dude telling us he can make it at least a homage is better then letting a series that was suppose to be as edgy and "child see's blood this must be what it means to be a teen-adult, serious, mature, blood."

Kids aren't psyched out about over the top killing anymore. This put it's it in the context that kids now are probably more into. Into relevance to the Original Batman movie of the 90's and Mortal Kombat, to Batman Begins and this trailer it's obvious there's a new era. At the same time it's playing a connection game. Though I do see your point Tyvon, I do understand; I just find this to be more of appeasement to storytelling. Honestly though if get's the job I'm pretty sure. Pretty sure he wouldn't stick to the realism. More borderline between this and the original movie.
The problem here is that the MK series has been trying all these dumb things in order to get fans and appeal to the "audience," and as a result haven't been getting new fans and alienating some of their old fans as a result. If they want to be relevant again they need to stop pulling the "Me too" card and actually try something original to get back in the game, but they don't actually seem to understand this.

MK was the game that brought Midway into a fortune, and it's also the game that made Midway go bankrupt. It's not just because people "grew out" of Mortal Kombat, its that the developers never "grew in" to the next generation properly. They don't know how to add their own features and ideas anymore like they did with MK4 and Deadly Alliance, now they just borrow ideas from other popular games and rely on stupid gimmicks and fanservice in order to please people for 15 seconds.

If it's purely from a "business" standpoint, then they should realize that they don't have what it takes for a business anymore and should quit while they're ahead and use their brainpower (or lack thereof) creating new IPs.
it feels like this kind of came out of nowhere
So from that it looks like our roster so far is Raiden, Shao Kahn, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Sektor, and... Night Wolf? Really?
at least its not like in armaggedon

"oh fuck we missed striker"
"just say we killed him"

no but really, most people liked the mario bros film because they were kids and they literaly ate everything that was <insert fav character/game here>, reason why years after we watch them and can't understand how could we enjoy that shitfest that literally made no sense at all

the original MK movie was made for kids and a overall general audience, hence why the catchy song, the flashy effects display, and overall the whole cheesy feel of the movie(hell i still remember when sub zero and scorpion appeared on scream and i literally shit myself). this new MK movie is made for those kids who grown up that now can understand a more deep, elaborated plot(using Scorpion's real name, for example, requires that you actually know about the character's background).

if you replaced the mortal kombat characters (from the original) and instead put someone like van damme as the protagonist you'd get your generic 90's action/fantasy movie because the plot itself was quite generic and its only merit was to showcase the mk characters to be honest, nostalgia aside.

hell if you put kurt russel as liu kang you'd get Big Trouble in Little China :V

but we're biased. its our childhood and no matter what or how that movie/comic/game is made, it will never fit perfectly with the child ilusions that are burned in our memory. and this is bussiness so "fuck common sense as long as it sells its ok". there are no facts besides what the charts say.

tyvon, really its not an attack agaisnt you at all, mean, i loved mk when i was a kid too(fuck who didn't want to be a yellow/blue ninja back in the day). but really, you're letting your nostalgia taking over your point of view way too much. its just a new interpretation, and the basic DNA of the game is still there.

PS: i remember MK being totally serious about itself, and everyone taking it seriusly :V.
it's literally not nostalgia at all, it's the fact that the series actually HAS gone to shit after MK4, stop saying it's fucking nostalgia because it's fucking not at all.

that's like saying if they made a cyberpunk zelda game that sucked ass and had no continuity between the series and someone said "zelda just went down the shitter" and you went "no you're just blinded by nostalgia HEHHHHHHHH"

if they were really thinking about MK from a business standpoint they wouldn't fucking touch the franchise, it's the reason Midway went bankrupt in the first place :///

Well that, and ONLY focusing on making Mortal Kombat games that weren't selling. Kinda hard to run a game developing company when there's only one IP currently running.
The Shoryuken forums will explain EVERYTHING that is wrong with the new MK games. Tyvon is only giving you a taste.
Everything he said was completely right. Ed Boon relied on cheap gimmicks and the IP to sell MK.
