Hey yeah, how about you have it the other way around? I'm not saying you do this, but since so many games having you digging downwards (usually looking for treasure), maybe you could have the player dig upwards instead!

As for the character, I suppose anything that doesn't have the well-known color combos of the Marios would remove a good amount of the confusion. For example, you could make him green and orange, or even red and brown, since that color combo is no longer usually recognized as Mario.

And I know you already said you're definitely not done with the dirt and all, but you could really make it look less plain with some rocks here and there, and maybe an occasional skull or something (a rusted old can?).

I tried redesigning him in paper, will try to convert it in pixels soon.

sorry, I completely overlooked this post :c

It's the number of tries. Since this game works like Lode Runner (or King's Valley), one wrong action will render you stuck, forcing yourself to suicide. But those games used a life system, which was annoying for a gameplay such as this.

here's the character design. Hopefully not Mario-looking anymore. Also made a girl because.
