So far I've read the first three volumes, but I honestly have no idea what to think about them.

Everything in the book pretty much happens without an explanation, minus all the parts about scott's past girlfriends, etc.
It's like something happens and the characters just go with it.

At certain points I can see the appeal, yet at others I can't justify a purchase.

Yeah, exactly. I felt I was maybe missing stuff along the way at points, stuff just... happens, sometimes.
