im having so many problems with this that i keep finding so dont worry previous lmao

I can't tell much, but you should make the clouds a bit more longer in width, try to browse pictures of drawn clouds, you'll see what i mean. So, kinda give them a little "trail" .
Maybe try to get rid of the last sky shade, since it's a bit too dark for a day sky, and if you try looking up the sky , the sky is always uni-coloured, except near the surface. Lastly, try to add a, white, 1 pixel thin, line to give the spaceships a bit more shine. example: Mouse ship from Kirby and Masked Dedede
Have you already tried to use some anti aliasing on the spaceship's shines? If you're keeping it colour limited, then don't worry about what I said
keep going Joshr, your entry was really the clean quality from your customs i expected of you and you're doing even better : D
My Ramblings on what I did:
I decided to leave the Darkest Shade for the Sky, but make it so it's, more or less, just the dithering...I gave the Clouds Trails (Or did you mean just Stretch out the entire Cloud?), And I completely re-shaded the ships, and I think it looks better than the old shading...And I also added a lighter white, not only for the shine on the Ships, but for the Clouds as well (Why make a new shade and not use it?), And While I was at it, I fixed other shading errors that I just happened to notice...Yes, I know I'm rambling now
Edit: Fixing up everything everyone mentioned (Especially the half-assed clouds, as well as trying to make the Tractor beam look more tube-like [to show that it's actually surrounding the rocks they're carrying])

I'm rooting for you Joshr, you really worked on this :'D

clouds look kinda half assed to me. not enough variation aka NO VARIATION. no two clouds would look alike normally
09-07-2010, 06:34 PM
I agree, the clouds just throw everything off. And I think the shine emerging from the bottom of the ships could be better somehow. Maybe have different shades in the ray? I don't know, just something about them needs to be changed.

Yo Josh you have a few days left, why not use all of them to make the clouds very nice and proper looking?

The only issue I really see is the pyramids look kinda flat, and maybe the jewel could be less mechanical like the rest of the piece, but I love the concept, personally
oh and there's slight banding on the sand where the sun is

(09-07-2010, 02:59 PM)cute Wrote: [ -> ]Like the others said, the pyramid is using a rather strange kind of dithering. Try to get rid of that, and observe how you can build a pyramid out of blocks. Don't hesitate to use references! They are key for these kind of challenges! It'll help you out a lot!
The clouds are sometimes a bit squarey and angular in some of the darker shades. Have you tried using some anti aliasing? it might help to smooth out those rougher bits in the sky. What's that yellow-brown spot on the left side of the fame? It's kind of random, but if you could tell me what it is, maybe we could help you with some tips to make it recognisable!
For the dunes, you should get rid of the small little dots. Just try to make it simple. Start simple and make progress form there. Have you tried to shade it like green hills, but just sandy brown?
Lastly, you used quite good anti aliasing on the black characters, why not do the same to blurr out the horizon? that could give you some need impression of super far distance :] ! do the same for the diamond too!
(09-07-2010, 03:05 PM)Previous Wrote: [ -> ]No need to freak out, I'm having my problems, too.The sandy dunes on the left are really well done. However, you could let the dune flow itto the flat area by mixing the shading. try to give the flatter parts some more relief too! Might not work, but it's worth a shot! :]
Since your pyramid and your oasis are pretty much from a top view, the horizon line doesn't fit with it. You don't actually see the horizon if you see the pyramid from that angle? Maybe enlarge the canvas to something DS-styled? That's something you can do if you wanna keep that beautiful starry sky!
What's that obkect in the top right corner of the pyramid btw? i can't tell what it is.

Mh, you're using the dithering like borders. Sky views are very flat and long in width, because they look flat if you see mist from very far away! try to blend them into eachother and try to do it first WITHOUT dithering. Start from simple, then go for the hard part!
You have the aurora challange right? I see you're going for the uni-coloured green one, and not the purple green mix. Aurora's are often like a wavy stroke of paper! maybe that's gonna make it more recognizable. Where the wavy aurora is close to the camera, make it very saturated, and the opposite for when it's far away!
