I thought I did a pretty good job with it, tried to establish a light source from above, but a little to the left. I definitely like the new colors better than the old, so that's good.
Some criticism would be helpful; I'll repost another oddish tomorrow after considering what you all say. =]
the colors are your best that I've seen so far, and the shading looks a lot more interesting
the only thing off I'd say is that oddish looks less circular; like it has been cut in half horizontally
All right, after editing here's what I've come up with:
Number 1 is the original before edits
Number 2 is with a rounder body and slightly thinner where the leaves attach to the body
Number 3 is with a rounder body and very thin where they connect
Personally I like number 2, but what do you guys think? Or should I try again?
3; if you look at official art (well, besides your avatar, which is from a slightly different perspective), you can see like the majority of the "circle" shape of oddish' body, the leaves just cover the very top
so yeah, I'd say 3 is the best one
and i'd recommend making it so he's a little bit "fatter" at the bottom and skinnier at the top
just a LITTLE bit though
Here's an edit of number 3 with a little bit of a fatter bottom:
3 is the oddish from before, and 4 is the newer one. Better?
Also, thanks a lot for helping me through this, dude. =] I really appreciate it.
yes, number 4 is noticeably better, go with that one
Oddish is done then? I'll continue to make edits on it and experiment to see if I can make it any better before I go any further with it.
I suppose my immediate goal would be to sprite oddish, gloom, and vileplume, and then animate a walk cycle for each, and some attacks for them. To start that off I *attempted* to sprite gloom:
I plan on scrapping it and starting all over again, but I'd like some advice on how to go about this before I get to it. The main problem I'm having is actually shading it (I'm sure I could improve the lineart if I redo it enough). I figure, from the official art, that the bulb on its head would block the top right light source, thus I made it a little darker on the top. Continuing to the actual bulb's shading, I really don't know how to do it. I've looked at some of the official sprites of gloom and I think the browns I have may contrast too much, I'm not so sure.
It would be really cool if someone could make a rough sketch of how to do it, or edit the gloom itself. Though, worded critique would be equally as awesome. Thanks.
Edit - The height of gloom should be proportionate to oddish (.5 meters to .8 meters)
I went ahead and redid gloom completely, and I think it looks a lot better this time around:
What do you guys think? Any edits I need to make?
Edit - Also, I'd like to know if gloom and oddish seem to be in the same style.
Gloom has a much darker outline than Oddish, and much less shading on the body, however, Gloom's style is probably better.

i like this gloom better, although you seem to have gone back to the oddish that was labelled "#3" before instead of the "#4"? why is that
also, I took a look at some official art, maybe give gloom's lips a somewhat darker, more purple color?
edit: i said "oddish" the first time and meant "gloom" whoops i'm an idiot
Ohh, my bad, I didn't mean to go back to the #3 one, just the sheet I'm working on with them is really messy so I accidentally picked the wrong oddish. I'll change it next time I update.
As for gloom, I'll definitely go back and make gloom's lips more purple. But should I edit gloom to fit more of oddish's style or the other way around?
i dunno, the gloom and oddish seem to be in a similar style, i don't think there's anything you'd have to edit as far as that goes
After editting gloom's shading and border color, I think I made it a little more in style with oddish:
I tried to make oddish's shading like the original gloom, but the more I worked with it, the more I started disliking how it looked. So I attempted to make gloom look more like oddish, and I think it went over pretty well compared with the new versions of oddish. So which is better? #1 or #2? The only difference between them is a small edit to the outline, I think #2 looks rounder, but #1 has the bottom a little wider than the top.
Edit - Ahh, made that before I saw your post, Rick. Well, what do you think, anyway?
i would say #2, for oddish, because of how round it looks
and i see what you meant by wanting to change the gloom now, i think it was a good decision
I continued on to attempting to sprite vileplume, and I really need some help:
The height vileplume is supposed to be is 1.2 meters, and each of those little marks is worth .1 meters. Both gloom and oddish fit well with it (oddish going over by two pixels, but I gave myself some leeway) but vileplume is giving me some problems. I figure the flowerlike thing is supposed to take up the majority of the 60 pixels of height it occupies, but I couldn't figure a way to make the flower look as good as it was when it was smaller (to the left). The shape of vileplume can be fixed with trial and error like oddish and gloom were, but shading the body is more difficult this time around. So if someone could offer some advice on the flower and shading the body, that would be cool. Edits are welcome, as always.
Oh, and the face is a definite WIP.
In the meantime, I decided to sprite electrode as I wait for advice what to do about vileplume:
There isn't much shading on the piece as a whole, but I don't think the sprite calls for it, other than the light to the top left. I don't know, though, think I need to shade more?
But, yeah, vileplume's my top priority.
