Independent, like, has the freedom to make games for every console.

For example, Behemoth, which made Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid HD.

Or as Shawn said, Level-5, which made Professor Layton and those games based off the Inazuma 11 games.

Last time I checked, Activision is independent too.

Actually "indie" is a term made up by people who want to own their own small private companies and not do contract work for pro companies because they feel this "i'm so cool FIGHT THE POWAH!!!" attitude.

so yeah, indie just means that they don't do contract work like most developers thus Bungie is not indie.
Technically, by the formal definition of indie (Company that makes and publishes their own games without an outside publisher), Valve is an indie company. Kotick has some shit tastes in games if he didn't even mention Valve.

Indie is just a short form of independent.

in·die
[in-dee]
Informal .
–noun
1.
an independently owned business: to work for an indie.

IE. Any video company not owned by a publisher.
The publishers are,(in the case of video games) Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
So Bungie was Microsoft's bitch, but they've moved on.
Halo is over.
Bungie left Microsoft to become indie studio.

Activision makes games for every publisher, so they are an independently owned business that is headed by Kotick.

Are you implying that he's actually even played a game in his life?

sorry bro but there are a massive amount of publishers, activision being in the top 3 itself.

He literally prides himself in the fact that no he has not.

GUYS:
Calm down, there are 2 definitions to indie.
It started as what proton is saying. But now people associate the term indie more with people who make games in small groups without much money.
its literally all the way back to the day that critic said games arent art and nerdstorms ignited the whole internet

Publishers, as in, they own a console that can have games published on it.
And I'm going by current gen.
Not previous.

Every time I hear about Inafune saying things like this it really annoys me. Capcom sucks at the Western "style" and I can't think of that many Western games that are even particularly interesting. Japanese games are the ones that come off as creative and fun to me, I dunno where he's getting these ideas from. Am I just not up-to-date or what?

Are there Western games that aren't shooters or generic tough-guy games that he could have in mind?

THANK YOU. That's exactly the point of my post. Whether your Western of Eastern, someone out there has different taste. Someone out there who develops or has a hand in game making, actually think they can tell people shit all about an opinion as if it were fact.

Here's an idea: Bobby, make something on PS3 and see if it will actually sell, try something not in space, or with aliens. Keiji, how's about you do something constructive like getting around to Megaman Legends 3.
Proton, I think the kind of independent you're talking about is what's usually referred to as "3rd party"
Usually when someone says indie they mean what Sengir or Woppet are saying

"3rd Party" is when you're a game dev that isn't from the company that released the system you're developing for.

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are 1st party.

Activision, Ubisoft and EA are 3rd party.
