A lot of them are already Pokemon though... Hm... Try to find a crustacean that hasn't been used before.
I kind of like the "water bird" idea. Like a duck/swan/pelican/eagle/etc.

Wait, why does this matter? Aren't there already tons of duplicate Pokemon types? Seal = Spheal, Chimchar = Mankey, Kakuna = Metapod, etc?
How about a dolphin - bigger dolphin - orca?
How about a Nautilus? It's the best animal to ever exist and it has never been done before in Pokemon.
Omanyte and Omastar are not Nautili.
I think Omastar is based on one...
Nope, Omanyte/Omastar are based on Allonautili.
Allonautili are extremely different from Nautili.
Allonautili are extinct (hence one of the biggest reasons Omanyte/Omastar is based off of them) and considered to be the predecessor to Nautili, however over time (through microevolution) Nautili have acquired many morphological differences. The biggest one being the chambered shell.

Sorry, I tried that one.
Apparently it has to be able to walk
Why does it have to be able to walk?
I actually really like the idea of some sort of cephalopod
All the other starter Pokémon walk

so......
doesn't mean they always have to
nor does it mean they always will by Gamefreak, one day we might get a starter that doesn't walk
That sounds like a viable, reasonable choice. The only hippo we've had so far is Hippopotas/Hippowdon. It'd be interesting to see a water hippo.
