I just updated with Merlon's beard already.

His beard is pillow shaded and banded.
Okay, I just adjusted the shade of the beard.

That's no better, really. Both problems still exist.
Hmm... a little bit better? It's probably not.

I think what you're doing is putting shading along the inner outlines of the top of his beard (which you should probably not do), instead of shading it more on the bottom/lower parts that are further away from the light, making it look banded/pillowed. After all the light source is coming from above the character's head, not in front of them. Hopefully I made that understandable. Otherwise, someone who knows this style might have to make an edit to better demonstrate...

Try this. It's probably not perfect, but it should look better.
I think Merlon's beard should be facing the same angle as the third pose, as it looks looks kinda akward.
*sigh* It's a mustache... not a beard. Tongue
Why did I confuse a mustache for a beard..? Fail, udder fail. *faepalm*

We should at least let him address the akward position of the mustache on the third pose himself instead of doing the work for him, it will certainly give him more experince.
This should be a little bit better.

Still not quite. I hope this gives you a better look.

I think this is the one that you meant.

Now move the beard up two pixels (as follows: one pixel up and another to the left), as it currently looks like all you did was reduce the left side of the 'stache. And should the angle of the lightsource change as well?
Hmm... I changed the light source on the mustache.
