It's that time again! Now be warned, ripping fighting games is no easy feat. If you have a program that will help us out, PLEASE share it. Some examples of stuff to rip are:
-Street Fighter: Everything from PSX to SNES to Genesis to Arcade.
-Mortal Kombat: A ton of games. Again, PSX, SNES, Genesis, Arcade is where the great games are.
-Killer Instinct: SNES and Arcade. This could be a tricky one. SNES only has black backgrounds. If anyone has any tips I'd be very grateful.
-Primal Rage: Prehistoric battler. We've got some menu sprites up. How about the playables?
-Clayfighter: SNES has 2 games. I'm not sure if the third (N64) used sprites. Could someone check for me?
Marvel vs. Capcom: PS2 and Arcade. Dazz has some programs, so PM him if you're interested.
This is far from all the major fighting game series. Don't see one you want to do? Jump in and people will get on board. I'm stumped on Killer Instinct, so I'm going to try out Clayfighter to see if that's any easier.
I checked and Clayfighter for the N64 does use sprites. Also, is Clayfighter 63 1/3, and Clayfighter: The Sculptor's Cut pretty much the same game?
Edit: I'm actually gonna unclaim Primal Rage for Gameboy. I might try something else. I'll post if I know what I'll do.
This looks interesting. In Fact, i have several Work-in-Progress Sheets, but haven't looked at them for a while. So far, i am ripping Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat II (Arcade), Zangief from Street Fighter II (Arcade) and Raven from Sega's "Eternal Champions - Challenge from the Dark Side". Somehow, i underestimated the workload that is involved with ripping fighting Game characters, however, i am looking forward to finish at least one of them.
Some thoughts on the Games you listed:
- Street Fighter: easy to rip with WinKawaks.
- Mortal Kombat: There are complete rips from the Arcade-Version at the Mortal Kombat Warehouse (
http://mkw.mortalkombatonline.com/) but if someone wants to make a TSR-exclusive rip, i have a mame cheat-sheet, that allows you to disable the Background Layers.
- Killer Instinct: i wouldn't bother to rip from the Snes Version, because it doesn't look too well. Arcade Version requires cheats to capture the Sprites ( look here:
http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=39174.0).
- Primal Rage: I ripped some menu screens and stages from the PSX-Version, but the Fighter-graphics are compressed. Very fluid animations (= tons of frames to capture).
- Clayfighter: The N64 Game uses 2D-Graphics.
If you want the Mortal Kombat cheat-sheet, grab it here:

(only works with older Mame Versions; i am using V. 1.20)
Thanks for the tips, guys! AJ, Sculptor's Cut is an expanded game, so it's pretty much the same plus more.
I have a couple of lesser-known, or at least less thought of fighting games that I'd love to rip from, two including VR Troopers and Might Morphin' Power Rangers, both on the Genesis.
My MvsC2 progress lost all favour after my computer exploded upon my return home, so that won't be of anything from my part... Sorry guys.
I'll get into ripping some content soon I think, I just need to get myself back to where I was with programs.
Having a lot of trouble with the Clayfighter games. CF1 looks like garbage on my emulator. CF2 keeps locking up. Both also suffer from the dreaded black background, so I'm having to cycle through characters for one that doesn't use black. A shame, cause I wanted to rip Hoppy.
I wonder if there was a way we could edit the palette data in a snes rom to change the background colours.
You'd know better than I would. Here's what I've done so far;
Clayfighter;
(still needs palette swaps)
CF Tournament Edition:
(so much stray crap because they're on a black bg, which hides it.)
CF2:
This has reminded me to finish my Karnov's Revenge sprite rips.
Off to work I go!
Oh ya, some time ago, I started ripping Kid Muscle from Ultimate Muscle for the GBA and this is what I have so far. And this is not even half of his poses because his body is different on both sides as you could probably already tell. Plus, there's a pose for each character where the opponent uses their special moves on you. I'd love to see this sheet finished someday. Completing this sheet would probably be a two man job, so if anyone wants to help out, they're welcome to.

I'll be helping out with this. Most likely, I'll be ripping Blanka from Street Fighter II, but I'll also finish up my two Eternal Fighter Zero sheets while I'm at it (would that count? It's newer than the other games mentioned), for starters. And
maybe Tron Bonne from Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but I'll have to set up my Dreamcast emulator to use the proper resolution again (the PS2 version's sprites that I extracted are bugged, but I can use them as references).
That one isn't layered properly, as you can tell...
@A.J. Nitro: That's something I'll consider helping out with. But man, it's probably gonna take a while before it's fully complete.
First contribution to this project is complete.
Haha, so
THAT's what game that ox is from!
Anyway, progress is going alright with Blanka. Got all of his basic actions ripped so far, working on all his attacks now.
