You know, as bad as this whole situation is, it's a fucking brilliant marketing strategy.

1. Find game with large fanbase

2. Much of the fanbase is disappointed in the amount of content in the game and the time it takes to get updates

3. Make a dumbed down clone of the game with more content but half the work involved to make it

4. Sell it and make oodles of cash.

brb making a 2d clone of Team fortress 2.

Only with hats AND clothes updates.

Oh and there are teams in every color of the rainbow too.

I'll make millions... muhahaha
All I consider this game is a marketing ploy. There's no way in hell it was created with originality in mind, it's nothing more than a blatant cash-in.

And it's working.
I would like to know of one single person who's bought this and has never played or even heard of minecraft before.

I don't see why anyone would bother buying it if that were the case, it's not a very attractive game...

sure it's not attractive, but for the people with shit pcs this is a godsend.

I don't think you fully understand how PC game performance works. The graphic quality isn't what makes a game run better, it's how the game is optimized. A game can look shitty like Terraria, but still be optimized poorly and run like shit as a response-- just like how a game can look nice like TF2 and run incredibly smoothly.
Lord, I can't believe this game. Where's the cease and desist letters from Square for this travesty? They put the kibosh on that awesome 3D graphic Chrono Trigger project (which from what I remember didn't go out to make money but I could be dead wrong), but these guys are SELLING this crap... Maybe they just feel bad for them because the graphics look like shit.

Also where are the creators of Minecraft while all this is going on? I mean, I don't play minecraft, I know a bunch of people who do though. Personally I'm surprised this thread wasn't flooded with people shouting "RIP OFF!" when this thread first opened.

Notch plugged the game on Twitter.

He plugged it. That means he supported it.

or a game can look decent like minecraft and run like shit on every computer
BTW, there's a texture mod thing I found. Working on getting rid of all the ugly character sprites. It's coming along pretty okay. Having issues with the moon though. I think it's stored differently from other sprites. I edited the thing that was supposedly the moon but it does nothing in game. It's a shame, too, I spent a whole 20 minutes on it.

I don't really have a problem with games that play similarly. The market is saturated with FPS games that all look pretty much the same to me but no one complains that bad company is a ripoff of call of duty or whatever the heck these games are called.

Innovative games with new gameplay are great and I strongly encourage that, but I think having games with similar gameplay is a good thing too- generally this will encourage competition between the developers which will lead to each developer striving to make their game the better of the two, and can lead to new innovations in those types of games. Hopefully having a few games like Minecraft and Terraria around will push developers to make these types of games to be as good as they can possibly be.

Without a doubt Terraria owes a lot to Minecraft, but I don't think that on its own makes it a bad game. What makes it bad (for me at least) is the half-assed presentation. Terrible (and in some cases stolen) graphics and awful sound- if you're going to sell this game for $10 the least you can do is hire some talented artists to work on it. Just because you already have a community for the thing pretty much guaranteed doesn't mean you should throw away efforts for making the game presentable.

anyway i traded some games for it over steam (wasn't going to pay for this, and that person already had this extra copy of this so whatever) since I did think the gameplay looked interesting and different enough from Minecraft that it'd be worth trying out.

Haven't done much in it so far but here's what I can say: People who are interested in the building aspect (since Minecraft was pretty big on this) are pretty much shit out of luck. The graphics are ugly as sin to begin with, so I doubt you'd expect much anyway. But the lack of the third dimension here really makes pretty much anything you build not really impressive. It's all pretty boring as far as building things goes. Luckily for me building things was never really what I was interested in when it came to Minecraft, but yeah, nowhere near like anything you could get in Minecraft if you're interested in building and designing things.

The adventuring aspect is much more developed than Minecraft though. That's what I liked about Minecraft, so it's good for people like me. There's a lot more stuff to it than Minecraft already, and a lot of things work differently or differently enough where it feels like a different enough game that I wouldn't say its a blatant ripoff or a "minecraft clone in 2d." There are a few things that resemble Minecraft a little bit too much though, such as zombies at night and beds changing your spawn point. Unlike minecraft, tools don't break and you don't drop all your items when you die (just money, I guess?). Crafting works completely differently, instead of Minecraft's neat crafting system you just need to stand near the piece of furniture needed to craft something (such as a furnace or crafting table) and have the items required to craft something to do it. It's easier than Minecraft in those regards, but because there's only two dimensions rather than three its harder to escape from foes and you start with much lower health (though apparently you can get more max health), there's a lot more enemy types (such as flying enemies), and the terrain is a lot harder to navigate. There's more treasure types and even NPCs, which makes things a bit more interesting. There's "boss battles" too, where you can fight giant monsters under the right circumstances. It's neat but kinda slow, probably built with multi-player in mind. I have not touched the multiplayer though, so idk.

Graphics and sounds are awful though, as expected. Can't believe they're selling the game with such horrendous graphics and sounds, especially for $10. I mean it's bad enough that the graphics are pretty obvious Final Fantasy sprite edits (the backgrounds resemble Super Mario All-Stars as well lol), but they don't even look good. I mean geez, if you're going to steal at least do something appealing with it...

If you like the adventure aspect of Minecraft, I think this might be worth looking into. If you like the building aspect, or you like good visuals and sound, stay the fuck away. Regardless though, don't spend $10 on this. Total fucking ripoff. Even if $10 is like nothing to you, spend it on something better, I'm sure you can find plenty of things for $10 that are way more worth it than this...

I wonder if he was just being "friendly" like most famous people do to keep up their appearance...

...or legitimately supports the game.

Or it wouldn't even EXIST without Minecraft existing and being popular first. Just saying that's like a 90% chance there.

And actually the game doesn't look THAT bad in terms of gameplay, but it looks ugly, sprites are ripped off, and the level design (what I've seen anyway) looks half-assed.

This game COULD be good even while being a rip-off of Minecraft, but it isn't yet. This is the kind of game people put online for free, not something that costs 10 dollars a hit.
I don't think Terraria would exist without Minecraft, for sure. It's likely that Redigit would have made something regardless though. Bits of the gameplay is stuff you could already see in SMBX in some form, the main example being the stage designer in SMBX (and the netplay with it- for some reason the stage builder was the only thing in SMBX with netplay even though there were legitimate multiplayer modes).
I don't get why people hate the idea of copying an idea from someone else and making it better. I mean, yeah, the other person got it first. If the newer person improves on it, then it's a good thing.

Not like Terraria did this, but yeah.

In fact, it's a bad thing when everyone's afraid of "copying" other people. This is one of the reasons why I hate patents; people are prevented from making good products because other people "got there first." Why do you think that Blu-ray players are $300 when DVD players are only $50? Because one company got there first, and they're making a shit ton of money off of something that is only different because it uses a different colour. Red light is about 10 times wider in wavelength than blue light. By changing the colour of the laser in the reader and slightly modifying the disc, they're able to shove 10 times more stuff on the disc. I don't see that being worth hundreds of dollars more.

Now, comparing that to games, it's the same thing. Companies copy off of their own games and make them better, which is fine. But everyone's afraid to just take someone else's idea of a game, improve on it by a lot, and sell it, simply because they're afraid that they're going to "copy" them.

Call of duty adds new weapons and a few gameplay tweaks each game. They're making $60 per player each time.

Terraria takes Minecraft and takes things out while adding more. You can't down the guy simply because he "copied" Notch. Down the guy because he did a shitty job at it.
