I agree that Mario Galaxy was a great game, it looked, played and just was awesome, the reason I don't like it above SM64 and SMS is that it had no hook to keep me playing it constantly, I could leave it for weeks without the urge to play it. Also the HUB was usless, they could have replaced it a map and a Mario icon and it would have been easier. Nothing in the HUB was fun, there was a red star which let you fly, no where special, no top of the castle and no top of the lighthouse, or giant dirty shine or bells to rings or secret worlds accessed by the sun. It was also filled with old Mario things which yeah is great but I did get sick of seeing them instead of new characters such as the islanders of Isle Delfino.

Overall it was great but had a very Mario party 5 feel to them.

hurr i'm talking about how there is literally no flavor in the game. you do the same shit every playthrough. it's too straightforward. there's not even a difficulty to the game so every time you play through nooooooooothing is iiiiiiinterestiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

there's nothing about galaxy that keeps me interested aside from the fact that it looks nice. SM64 was challenging and packed with secrets. Galaxy is "YOU GO HERE. GOOD JOB. YOU BEAT THE GAME IN 1 PLAYTHROUGH"

qq. shit.
I could go on and argue why Galaxy is just as interesting, challenging, and fun as 64, but I won't because you haven't played through the whole thing to know.

So don't tell me that "Luigi's Purple Coins" wasn't challenging unless you've tried it. Because collecting 100 purple coins on a slowly disappearing structure under 3 minutes is pretty damn hard.
The whole Luigi thing was just sad in my eyes. What a crap way to make you play through the whole game again...
I must have played through Mario 64 so many times over my life, at least 20. Galaxy I played through once, and for a few hours as Luigi but soon lost interest. I don't think Nintendo is very good at making longer, re-playable games anymore. I'm not talking epic quest, as one play through is normally enough, but games that aren't 30 minutes long.

No I was referring to this.

Now try playing that with Luigi's slippery feet. (And by the way, that guy makes it looks easy. It takes a lot of practice to get that good and he took a lot of risks and was lucky a bunch of times in that video.)
That was a great game, getting all the stars (which by the way there's plenty more after the credits roll) and then getting them again with Luigi with the slippery feet and different jump height it's almost a different experience. Of course the whole finding the stars as it was with Mario isn't as hard since you've found them all before. You do get a reward after getting them all, you can play an extra level with both Luigi and Mario which is basically for nostalgia and you get a picture which is sent to your Wii. (Of course it's not that great, but the over-all experience is nice.)

And think about the argument of it being too much like Mario 64, what if it wasn't like Mario 64? Then it wouldn't be in the (3d) platforming genre, or it wouldn't be a Mario game.

As far as I can tell, the Wii and DS are getting a lot of people to play games that never would have played them before. They aren't getting them by being horrible, they're getting them with very intuitive and new things that no one has ever heard of before.
They are surely accomplishing their goal of getting new people to play, without any trouble whatsoever.
Have you seen the Nintendo Channel? I swear it was one of the most intuitive things I've ever seen.
In my opinion, they aren't outselling their competition because of everyone being stupid. They're outselling them with fresh, intuitive, and original ideas.
Bottom line, though: It's far more worth its price than the competition. That's why it really sells well.
I can't even think about buying the other consoles because they're too damn expensive, I'm sorry Microsoft and Sony, but I have to pay the bills and put food on my table. (Even though the prices are going down.)

And you're surprised that they're getting low tier gamers left right and sideways? Microsoft and Sony pander to high-middle to upper tiers with their games. After all, how many new gamers does it generate?
Exactly, they have a much broader market, as they are born every day. XD
(08-20-2008, 08:39 PM)Zee Wrote: [ -> ]Nintendo's kicking the ass out of the other two groups in terms of getting new people to play video games. This creates a bit of what you call a tier-explosion. That shovelware you talk about is actually easy-to-learn, easy-to-play game tiers that the others have long since forgotten, albeit a few minor games here and there. So Nintendo gets new gamers, the other consoles look at the sales and drool, and follow suit. Nintendo, meanwhile, moves up the tiers of complexity to guide their new members into the higher tiers and turn them into solid gamers, which is good for the market.

No, I'm not claiming Nintendo's a god or anything, I'm just saying their business model is fantastic for sales. Cheapest console, readily available games and easy to pick up and play, with in-house games of good quality. Can't ask much more for people to get newbies involved. So Nintendo's sales are driven by newbies and fans, and yanno what? That's what keeps them securely in the black.
*applause*
I just want to say, I would play all of the consoles if I had the money, as I don't tend to be a "fan-boy." I enjoy all of the titles on the other consoles just as much as the ones on the Wii. I just think you guys are making the Wii out to be less than it is.

I could also add, that according to Game Informer, Nintendo's show at E3 was less than satisfactory, as they showed off some weird music playing thing which from what I read doesn't look like much of a game.
They announced Animal Crossing which for me, is something I can't wait for, as the original experience on the GCN and the second one on the DS were great (addicting) games.
Now that, said, of course like any other gamer, I would've loved to have seen a new Zelda, Mario or Metroid game (I guess we have to deal with the fact that those are good games they have going for them), so it was a little of a let-down.
Anyways, I hope they make up for that. (GI gave Microsoft a B, Sony a B- and Nintendo a dreadful D.)
There are many games on all of the consoles that excite me and I would love to play, but I can't afford it. Very Sad
But, if I did have the money I would get all three.
(Said it again)
I was thinking of what to post here for a while. I was thinking on just saying the best game ever made will appear on Wii (Wario Land: Shake It), but that's blatant fanboyism.

So I guess I'll post something relevant later.
We still wanted Galaxy to be a 3d platformer, of course. Within that broad genre there is plenty of room for innovation. To me, it just seems like Nintendo was lazy. Sunshine took 64 and introduces an entire set of new mecahnics and techniques. Galaxy just added small confusing spheres with camera problems (camera was focused too far in).
Wait did someone just say Luigi's slippery feet was a good idea?

I didn't like Galaxy when I first played it. I wasn't until I didn't play it for a few weeks and then came back to it that I enjoyed it. I think it just takes a while to get used to and you either like it or you don't.

Just to fight for the PS3 a bit - I haven't played a single game better than MGS4 on any console yet.

So I'm guessing you haven't played Hitman: Blood Money or Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

edit: or Metal Gear Solid 2

and these are all just stealth games
I don't believe Hitman or Splinter Cell are exclusive to anything are they?
And I would say MGS4 (well any MGS game) is better than MGS2.

Though I should have really said "haven't played a game better on the current gen consoles" as that makes more sense.
mgs4 is not that good

have you played any of the following

fable
fable
fable
gta4
rock band
fable
fable 2(upon release)
I hate Fable, I tried playing it and I actually hate it. GTA4 is just another GTA but now you have to go on dates and crap. Got pretty far on it but like all GTA games it didn't hold my interest. I would say that Gears of War is a better game than MGS4 but the sheer shittyness of the story knocks it down a lot and it's campaign is brutally short not to mention that a lot of people cheated later on. I'm not saying that Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best game ever - I'd say Mushihime-sama, Metal Slug 3 or maybe Ikaruga holds that title.
And yes I guess you could say that Ikaruga is on XBL-Arcade and counts as a current gen title. But if that was the case Bionic Commando Re-Armed (on the PS3 not 360 as it has the better D-pad) would be the best current gen game I've played as the best mode from Ikaruga was taken out. However for what ever reason it is I don't see these titles as current gen games and I stand by my statement that "MGS4 is the best current gen game on disc."

And hey this doesn't mean that MGS4 is perfect, it means I think the current gen doesn't hold a candle to last gen (yet).

Oh my GOD, that game was so shitty. Awkward clunky controls, bad level design, glitching and clipping pretty much everywhere, and it has a tendency to crash on both fat and slim PS2s (Between 5 different PS2s of varying use, and 2 copies of the game, only 2 combinations of those actually ran without seizing up at any point). When it didn't crash, it made the PS2 growl like a monstertruck driving up a mountain made of Rice Krispies.

The sandbox element to killing people doesn't outweigh how terrible the presentation was. I beat it once, thanked god that it was over, then never touched it again.
I really, REALLY got bored of Fable, Those god damn Loading screens.

Its the story, It was really boring. They had great Ideas with Fable, Its just it was executed like shit.
But, I'm really looking forward to Fable2, Lets hope they do things right this time around.
