It's mostly stuff that flies under the radar. I knew that some of them I watched weren't really popular and belive me, I'm no hipster due to the fact I don't read visual novels, and I rarely, I mean.. RARELY do I watch anime nowadays.
I even watched TTGL and I never bothered finishing it.
I don't see the relation between hipsters and visual novels. There are people that enjoy the visual novel version rather than the anime, that isn't being a hipster.
Out of curiosity, what "non-mainstream" animes did/do you watch?
I have yet to finish the following:
Midori no Hibi (Ep.12), Battle Spirits (Ep.30, used to be popular -in japan-, now it's not. VERY obscure stateside), though most other anime I watch end up forgetting due to watching some of them on Keyhole TV, to the point of obscurity (this includes Under the Bridge, which I came across on my own).
I'm more of a Sound Novel (AKA Radio Drama in the states and England) guy, myself. Listened to quite a few, RMZ or not.
I don't really know about Battle Spirits, that's true, but as far as I know Midori no Hibi was very popular when it came out, especially by the fact that the main character has a loli puppet for a hand. Even truer (?) for Arakawa Under the Bridge (if that's what you meant by "Under the Bridge"), since it was a manga popular enough to become an anime with two seasons.
I know you probably meant western popularity, but really, there are hardly "non-mainstream" anime, I guess it depends on the genre/studio you follow or tend to like. It's hard to find "obscure" things because hardly anyone would put their time and effort on subbing and translating obscure anime and not advertising it everywhere.
Guess that's true.. Though Arakawa Under the Bridge I end up forgetting easily, so I call it the latter, though I had no idea that it was a popular manga. Sue me.
But Midori was one of those that had a spike of popularity the first run (in japan obviously), then died down later on. Western popularity is what I meant too. Also, I don't read manga that much, so I don't know about the anime I watch and where it came from.
I guess the reason why most anime are not very popular in the west is due to the very diffrent tastes in culture. For Example: Suicide is legal in japan as Seppoku, but it's illegal in most other countries. But when it comes to animation, it's an entirely diffrent beast.
And Battle Spirits was one anime I watched up to Ep.30, but I didin't tell anyone about it's existance until now because of it's genre that most of us won't agree upon.

VNs arent hipster if you want hipster read some of the obscure one shot mangas made by failed nobodies or doujinshi that aren't porn.

I swear I have a catman dvd somewhere, but never got around to watching it.
I'll keep tabs on the rest... wait VNs ain't hipster? That's new. I thought Fate/XX was in when it came to that stuff.
Although, has anyone got suggestions for sound novels that isin't relaited to Mega Man in some way, I might've heard them all there.
FSN is popular as fuck, so are Higurashi, Clannad, Saya no uta, Tsukihime
And School Days and it's fun ending.
Also you said "read" visual novels, but the most correct term would be "play", since it's technically a game. What you must be saying by hipster, is people that played the visual novel way before the manga and the anime came to be (Fate/Stay), because that was a time in which VNs weren't really popular I guess... But since now they're literally everywhere, it's kinda wrong to think like that

No it isn't. It's pretty much a novel made in power point, all you do is pick random choices, unless we are talking about something with a minigame like Shikkoku no Sharnoth

I finished Steins;Gate last night and watched the ova tonight.
It was really good and I really liked it, though I had a couple of issues with ending-related stuff.
Either way, it was a really good show.
Gonna start Fate/Stay Night tomorrow.
Read all of Neko Majin, that was pretty funny.
