You could always make a folder on your desktop, and put all of the shortcuts in there. Sure, you'll have one extra action you'll have to do, but it can clean up your desktop.

You could always just get rid off all the stuff on your desktop. Mine is all clear, not even a recycle bin disturbs the view.
For shortcut purposes, there's the quickstart bar and docks (I use RocketDock, but there's plenty other fine applets out there).

My desktop for February is basically my signature (it was a wallpaper originally).
