i remember quite a few duels which people dropped out of...
but i'd love to see the duels board reawakened though
yeah now that you mention it i can remember that happening too, but for some reason i think dropping out of a duel would feel like even more of a dick move than dropping out of something like tugs, since you'd inevitably be letting somebody down (whereas in a bigger competition dropping out wouldn't feel as bad since there are a ton of participants)
(08-05-2011, 06:45 PM)Mighty Jetters Wrote: [ -> ]So the new changes are about sorta encouraging people to rip sprites as well as sprite (or just rip, whichever) in the pixel art section? Or about teaching them to use TiledGGD or whatever program? I probably won't understand this whole formula until it actually gets started...
In short, trying to teach people to rip and sprite too? Apologies for seeming rather clueless. Once I get it though, I get it~
That's right, so that they have an idea what ripping is about, and who knows, maybe become a regular ripper, or at least an occasional ripper.
The workshops won't teach anybody how to use ripping programs like TiledGDD, hopefully there should be FAQs and/or tutorials for these programs. Or at least I hope they'll be put on tVGR.
Also, the point of the workshop isn't really to teach how to sprite, it's teaching to sprite in a certain style. The point of the workshop isn't to teach somebody how to rip a sprite: it's something the members can choose to do as well as learning how to sprite in a style.
They could PM the ripper in charge of the workshop for more information, it's something they can do a bit of research on if it interests them.
Ohhhhh I see now. I'd love to see more rippers. This is a great idea. I endorse this because as you may know, I'm a
regular ripper and may even help people learn some things!
So, one (or more) person's in charge of one style workshop (is it regular members or only mods running the workshops?), and people can ask them things about the style/about ripping if they're interested in it? For example, if I took charge of like, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland style, what would you want me to rip from that game? Everything? Just wanted to know a few more things.
It's whoever is dedicated enough to write something up for a game's style. You could be a potential contributor to one of these threads!
If you took charge of that game, I think the best thing to do isn't to rip the whole game, but a few examples of what you think summarizes the game's style well (like a few enemy sprites, a few backgrounds, etc).
I wanted to pitch some ideas to get members interested and willing to see this happen.
'K, gotcha. Unfortunately though I don't know what I'd be able to contribute (besides rips) because I'm honestly not the type who actually knows about styles... I couldn't really tell you much about them, basically. I'd need a lot more spriting time (outside of TUGS) so I can learn stuff and be able to help with different things.
That's okay, because it's not something I plan on doing during TUGS.
You could provide rips to the person who wants to analyze a game style, for example!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to more suggestion or questions, folks!
do as you please, i'm just the bad cop.
but i thought you were the good cop???
Maybe a sort of sprite showcase board could be opened granted it's moderated to an extent. Basically a small little board where you can post custom sprites that an you feel are completed but have no plans to submit them to TSR for public use.
I'm probably just throwing this out of the bin but I feel as if too many new people are just randomly posting their "custom sprites" in the boards recently and they expect to have their asses kissed just for making something that's simplistic. I think making this is at least show who feels they don't need to improve their sprites and show the people who want to try to improve their sprites
Sounds interesting! Could you explain that in more detail, please? I've got problems visualizing it.

To describe it, the idea of a user based museum sort of comes to mind, like kind of like sites such as DA or Pj but more simplistic than ether of those given this is just a forum. Like I said earlier the idea of the board is for people to simply show their work
granted they feel confident their work needs no further improvements. this way if we have artists that feel they know what their doing they can post their stuff in a single topic for show and nothing more. And people can at least have something new to look at (And get ideas from, if they want to try a certain style someone is spriting or pixeling in) since the thread could be updated as much as the OP who made it desires and if they have work they don't have plans to submit to TSR then they don't have to, this kind of thing could have users post more original works in there. And this has a good chance of attracting new people here who are experienced in Pixel Art.
My idea of moderation is kind of a quality control, there could be a staff group like the sprite moderators to look into the topics being made there, if they feel someone's work could be improved upon then they can move the topic (or post if it's possible) into the sprite discussion and at least give some reason why that person's work can be improved.
This idea kind of popped into my head so I'm open to suggestions in what can be improved for my little idea of a board.

This sounds a lot like something a forum I used to admin had. We had two seperate forums for "showcases" and critique. If people didn't want to work on something anymore or were coming back to it later and didn't want critique on it for the moment, they'd post it in their personal Showcase thread.
It worked out pretty well, though I agree with Dio on having a sort of quality control going. Make sure people aren't posting shitty Sonic edits in their showcase, etc.
i have an idea for the sprite discussion entire board
remove metaru from being a mod. he doesn't do anything that requires mod powers and he doesn't actually do anything from what I've seen.
Here's an idea. Since so many people that stop by tSR are new to spriting, maybe if we set up a Novice Sprite Forum, we could get more members and keep the rest of the board organized, teach new spriters, etc.
And for those of you that think those newcomers wouldn't know where to stop by first, and just post wherever, keep in mind, those that don't know where to post will either learn eventually, or just leave. Those who really want to learn and stuff would go to that forum. How bout it?
