more npcs
you could always change the generic villagers so they don't look like Error clones. Also metallic things such as armor should have bright highlights so it doesn't look so opaque.

Well, he's supposed to look like someone from biblical times, so the fact that you think he looks like Jesus means I did something right
he's the protagonist for a game idea I have floating around in my head right now
give more options of clothing for the NPCs unless you want them to be giant grapes and apples
well, the colors are certainly better now, but make the villagers wear something not purple or red for a change. You aren't limited by NES' palettes so be more creative.
The clothes don't even need to be monochromatic. Don't be afraid to embellish an NES game - We all know that NES games need to be fleshed out and "revamped", so just go crazy with the sprites.
