Exactly. I see nothing wrong with it, they fit the characters and it felt fresh (not to mention the guns/cannons in the BG of Axle's stage fits perfectly with the GnR motif ).
And also, it felt like it added just a bit more personality and character to them. They actually had their own special names, and not just generic Maverick names, if you get what I'm saying.

Well usually Maverick names usually consisted of an animal and what their power is, so with Chill Penguin you could tell he was a Penguin who used ice attacks, Gravity Antonion was a big ant-like guy who messed with gravity and Overdrive Ostrich was a long necked bird who may have raided Godot's coffee pot.
The English X5 names were kind of strange and didn't really tell what they were meant to be. Spiral Pegacion, a flying Pegasus guy became Skiver so I thought he was a Reploid who skived off his duties and was labelled Maverick because of it.

Yeah, I know how it works, I've played the main 6 games and am gonna play the rest of them eventually.
I will admit that I couldn't tell what The Skiver was until I read about it online, but even if he had the original name I still wouldn'tve been able to tell what he was.
I could very much tell what everyone else was though. Except for Dark Dizzy, I actually thought he was a panther when I first saw him on the stage select screen... but really, unless they were to change his name to Dark Bat or something, Dark Necrobat, while sounding cool does not make sense.

I loved X4 even with the silly voice acting (Honestly, Iris is always gonna be Australian to me now)

Speaking of X4/X5, is there any good way to rip from those yet?

Maybe Barubary knows. He's on the staff at sprites inc and they seem to have ripped from all the psx X games.
Edit: Wait... those could all be from the PC versions. Didn't think about that.

PSX games can be ripped using ePSXe save states on PSX-VRAM.
By the way, is there anything on Megaman that hasn't been ripped yet?

I have wanted to someday rip from a PSX game, so whenever we decide to rip from the PSX MMX games then I want in (don't forget that SNES MMX3 isn't anywhere near complete either).
Also, how do you tile rip from the discs...? I thought you had to use a ROM, unless I'm misunderstanding.

You can open PSX discs on a computer, and work from there. It doesn't work for all games (Some games have data embedded on the disc like Star Ocean 2 and Xenogears, others are compressed), but it does at least for Megaman 8, X4-6, and I believe the Legends game.
Megaman 8
I don't remember off-hand how the directory is, but the sprites are in various .pacs for 8, .arcs (not an archive) for X4, and I think ZNULL.DAT for 5 and 6.

O_O
Why isn't there someone on this right now?

Because I don't own the games (except on the GC version of X Collection)... >_<;

Also, while it's easily accessable, it isn't all arranged in a usable manner - things are a bit all over the place, and I seem to recall the palettes are irritating.

Palettes were mostly a problem with 5 & 6, 8 had the palettes within the stage files and X4 had the palettes within separate stage files (but named the same so not so difficult). The palettes in the other two were in the beginning of the DAT, but because of the number of them (Zero doubles the amount) you have to sort through dozens of them.
