Zoroark was one of the first pokemon teased for the new gen, and had a movie based on him. Just like Lucario. I'm just following the pattern.

It makes sense. Jigglypuff and Pikachu aren't going anywhere at this point. Pokemon Trainer might, but I don't see that happening. Maybe he'll get an "upgrade" of 'mon, but I don't know if he'll be removed.

The fourth slot is a whole new ballgame. In Melee we got Pichu and Mewtwo. Mewtwo was hugely popular and Pichu was the token "not gen 1" Pokemon. Pichu was rightly hated and removed from the roster when Brawl came around, so in some sense, Lucario replaced him, not Mewtwo. Mewtwo was replaced by other gen 1 Pokemon.

In a nutshell, they can't ditch Pikachu and Jigglypuff at this point, and the Trainer is a unique spin on the idea, but they need to have some kind of representation of latter generations. It makes sense that the fourth slot should cycle with the newest generation. Mewtwo/Pichu -> Lucario -> Zoroark.
Would be amazing if Smash Bros. 4 had some sort of "style" system similar to weapon/hat styles in TF2. Where each character has multiple costumes to choose from, and each costume has the appropriate color schemes. The return of Doctor Mario ho!
Man, I hope so. Costumes like Dr. Mario, Dry Bowser, and Other M Samus would be amazing.
Mewtwo (and Roy) wasn't replaced, he was intended for the final build but they ran out of development time. He was probably pushed down when the Sega deal was made, and Sonic took priority.

I also see Zoroark as a likely Pokemon candidate, but I don't think they'll be cutting any of the Pokemon reps this time around.

Zoroark's illusion abilities can be really useful in a fighting game. Like by making shadow dopplegangers to confuse people.
Eh, I guess. Still, his main ability, appearing as other Pokemon, can't translate into the Smash Bros. setting. Even if it makes some sense, I'm still allowed to keep my opinion that I really really really really don't like Zoroark and I really really hope he isn't a character, though, right?

I really hope they do what they did for Brawl's music in this game, with the large amount for each stage, that was one of my favorite features. Maybe make CDs a bit easier to get though, so I don't feel compelled to exploit all of them into existence with a custom stage, or keep spamming the same room in the Adventure mode until a CD shows up.
Zoroark could just transform into a Pokeball Pokemon and use their ability? Or a random assortment of other Pokemon with unique abilities? He could play like Ben 10 did in Punch Time Explosion?

You're free to keep the opinion that he's a suckass, I have that opinion too.
But then he'd be Ditto, not Zoroark. Zoroark doesn't transform, he just appears to look like a Pokemon. If he attacks while putting up an illusion, they're still his normal attacks. Though, I guess there is some promise in a moveset built around shadow clones, that might be interesting. Kinda like Chizuru from KoF, or Naruto or something. Eh.

Anyway, I don't want to clog up this thread with Zoroark talk, feel free to talk about something else!
Why limit it to Pokemon? He could transform into any fighter.
Can Zoroark transform into humans? Or illusion humans, anyways?

I really don't know much about him, other than he's Nintendo's Gen V pet and he turned into Suicune.
He/she can turn into anything. In the anime Zoroark often changes into various humans.
Yeah well in the anime Mewtwo was an untouchable being. :V
And had deep emotional issues
Yeah, if we're gonna go by anime rules here, Pikachu should win every match, no questions asked, regardless of typing or if what he does even makes sense, unless it's convenient to the plot that he lose. And since Smash Bros. HAS no plot...

My point is that if we're going to be faithful to what Zoroark actually does, which is illusions, his attacks don't actually change, they just look different and in effect should do the exact same thing. Actually transforming and copying moves is Ditto's deal. (who was actually originally planned for Melee, apparently! People guess it would have acted like an AI copy of your character for a little bit but for whatever reason, either hardware restraints or design choice it was cut)
