Again, most of my post was aimed at Gorsal,as it really seemed like he was trying to make the shading on his Sonic match Mario no matter what.
And I'm not biased at all, believe me or not,I absolutely hate the original S3K sprites(Sonic 2 all the way!).
What I'm trying to say is that Deebs (readBig Grineebs,as in not me)wanted to the sprites to be a spiritual succesor to S3K,and I think Gors' edit looks and feels nothing like that, but I'm not saying they should look exactly like the originals(again,I hate the originals).
Here,I'll just throw in this thing:
It's a brand new sprite (as in NOT an edit of Deebs),but with clean, nice shading, and looks nice against Mario, both size and shading wise imo.
I tried to make it into something actually fresh and new, while still retaining the feel of the S3K/Modgen sprites.
Middle row keeps a ModGen-ish palette, but with a brighter lighest white.
Last row uses a different palette for the whites and black.

How's this?

This is definitely getting better and is much less cluttered which is good. Sonic appears to be a bit taller and the longer legs make the proportions much better than the original.

But those random white pixels on the quills still stick out like a sore thumb. Rolleyes
Really, why are they even there? They add absolutely nothing to the sprite. At the very least I could somewhat understand having them on the brow (even though they looked bad), but their current placement is completely random.
You should remove them altogether.
I've been here and I apologize for not yet replying to anyone's posts, I'm ruminating over all of this.

I just wanted to say thank you for the time you've taken out of your days to provide examples for me and that I appreciate it.

That was a giant overshoot for "simplifying". Removing the nearly all debth and detail for a flat sprite makes it easier for the eye but does it leave much for the accuracy and characteristics? Honestly, I cannot even imagine that in a game, maybe in a silly comic.
That isn't making it better overall at all in my opinion.

Personally;

And I even didn't start remaking this.

Whatever,I still think it's possible to make "a better sprite overall" while still keeping the feeling that it was meant to give.

A:Moved the forehead to the eyebrow.
BUnsurehine on quill slightly extended to look more like an actual highlight and less like a random spot.
C:No shine on quill.
Very SadNo shine at all.

I personally like B the most,Sonic IS supposed to be shiny after all, even if it doesn't make sense, that's just how he's meant to look like.
..also I think I should change the palette back to the original =/
I feel like this thread has become nothing more than a bunch of people poking at a hive filled with africanized bees. Sad

But anyway, how about combining everyone's efforts into a single, uniformed, sprite style? That should please everyone or not.

1. Take Shinb's tune-up, and follow that as an example.
2. Add Gors' simplistic approach into shinb's sprite, my real gripe for getting into this style as it was a constant battle with those damn shinespots.
3. Follow what Hedge said, and do away with unnecessary detail. I hate how everyone thinks that sprites are pixel art. That mindset needs to go.
4. You ALL are not Abysswolf. Stop thinking you are and cramming all that uneseccary detail.
5. While TSR's crits are harsh, take note is that they are willing to help if you let them.
6. Use what you learned and adapt to the new situation. Humanity has been doing this for 1,000+ years.
Like I said over at MFZ, I think that Shinbs B option is the best. Not only does it keep the spirit of the project, it makes the random pixel and makes it look like an actual highlight and looks more accurate to Modern Sonic models.
I think I'm nearing a decision. I'll let you guys know sometime after I get home from work today. Either way I'm fairly sure some group of folks will be unhappy... but that's true for any decision.
the main problem with you wanting to put the shine is not the shine itself

it's that you're hellbent on making it gray

why gray

of all shades of blue, why do you need to stick with gray

"because the original S3&K does it" is a shitty excuse btw
Because grey and white are commonly used to highlight blue, just like you used PEACH to highlight Mario's RED cap.I think it's completely unneeded to add a new light blue shade to the palette just for 3 pixels on his head.

The sprite with a "*" replaces the "goddamn grey highlights" with light blue,it IS better, but I don't think it's truly needed.

The point of the other sprites there is to show that I somewhat DO support remaking the sprites.I never reallly liked how much they sticked so much to the original S3 sprites, and I believe making them into something fresh and ACTUALLY new while still keeping the "spirit" of the project really is possible, and I think it'd be the best option really, but I'll get more into that later on.
If that's the case, from what I can tell is that the "spiritual successor" has too much contrast between the blues. Also, either the top quill needs to be a tad longer, or the other 2 quills need to be a little bit shorter.

I'll look into it if I can get the time.

It was on your previous edit, and looked better with it anyway.I didn't realize you took it away, since Sonic was the focus on your original post,so I just overlooked Mario.
It's also pretty cool that I tried to fix something you pointed out and then you just reply back with a dick image aimed to a mostly unimportant part of my post.Twice.

Fixed contrast on blue and made an alt with shorter quills.
May I request everyone to calm down? Feels like there's some tension here which is absolutely not necessary.
I don't want this to end up in quarrelling about something as tiny as a pixel.
