I still think there's too much shading on the head, since M&L works with a quite top-oriented lightsource and the sides of objects usually are hardly shaded at all.

back of the head looked too slanted, the shading looked like it was coming from below because of the shading on the back of the head following the slant, the pose wasn't very balanced as the legs short size dont make them look like they can support much weight, I'm also shocked at how many useless colours the original sprites use, the style of which had bled over into your sprite too, removing them made no visible difference but saved you some colours, the hands and feet were also slightly off.
EDIT: also the eyes were too close together

I hope you don't mind Bombshell but I edited your edit to illustrate another point.
What you guys have to understand is that the way his head was shaded implied the light was in front of him. It must be coming from above. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but practically nothing in M&L style shades shiny objects like that. Sometimes you have to sacrifice details like that for it to be in style. I made several changes based on things I think help it fit more into the style based on what I know about it. Most parts of the sprite also use 4 shades per color. A lot of it is AA to make everything really smooth. It's possible to find colors that do the job while not being pointless, so just hunt around for sprites with the same or similar color scheme you're going for. Among the things I changed, I tweaked the colors a little, modified the legs, changed his mouth plus gave him eyebrows for extra expression, and made him a pixel thinner as he is not that chunky. Hope that helps! (I spent way too much time on this...)
Also you should edit the thread title to mention something about M&L3 sprites so that Ridge/Starpower will know to look here.
EDIT: Forgot to make him shorter since he shouldn't be taller than Mario whoops. :I

I'm certainly not done, but I have no idea what I should do with the legs or body. Any suggestions?

well atm it looks like hes dancing a jig, leave it like that and have him followed by a disco ball, I for one think it would be magnificent.

Its kind of hard imaging him as an idle with that same expression.
He looks like a robot like that, at least animate the face

I'd recommend some blinking. Not sure about the legs, though. Torso could turn left and right.

You should probably animate Gilbert that adds personality to the idle. I'm not sure what it is but you should find it out.

I'll try moving the face around the body. I'm not so sure on how to animate the face. Maybe I'll give him the extra idle thing, like the one Mario has, so he can actually have a different expression.

I'll add some blink as separate frames. I'll try moving the torso.

You mean like, a different expression? I'll try.

Anything else that is weird?
