Jetters, the first 2 sprites posted aren't ripped from any game as far as I can tell.
Mario Land 1 and 2 were both on the Original Gameboy and I think they're customs.

Don't recolor ever.
There's nothing to comment on, It just kills me on the inside to see it.

We can't give advice on recolors because it's something really easy that anyone else can do, so in order for us to have anything to say about it, you would have to at least edit the sprite itself.
(If I'm to be honest, you were better off with the custom sprites you had before, so you should keep to those)

There's already a crappy blue luigi, but that was an inside joke sooo...

I suggest you start working on something a little harder, like a full-on custom sprite that's not in the base style that was shown here, but here's a tip: Take advantage of the game's pallete, it's in the tutorial section of the main site and make something new out of it.

But he's right, recolours are worthless and do you no favours in learning how to sprite. A five year old could make a recolour, and it wouldn't look any different. If you want to improve, try something that's outside your comfort zone, and we can give you suggestions as to how to improve it.
