The game isn't even out yet. It is completely possible Link is going to get an actual different alt.
Yeah, I worded that poorly trying to make it different than the post I made on a different forum. I'm not sure why he thinks we'd be excited to see that recolor when he's been showing off actual alt models.
Because it was actually a pretty neat recolor?
Apparently the latest GameXplain video has info on unannounced boss characters including Kraid. Can't watch it at work unfortunately.

What was shown was an alt color for Link and 2 alt costumes for Little Mac. Assuming that character A won't get costumes because character B did is a bit premature, especially when making that assumption from 2 images.
Up until now we didn't know that Little Mac would get these alt costumes, so until more info gets released we can't say for sure that Link won't get alt costumes.
Supposedly, someone at the E3 demo heard that characters could have 10 or more costumes, so don't jump to conclusions so soon.

The video mentions Kraid as possibly being a boss character in Smash Run, according to a Nintendo representative from one of the events. Supposedly there is also a Kremling boss character, but the representative couldn't tell the difference between K. Rool, Krusha, and Klump.
That's possible, but they mentioned Random Boss Encounters as being one of the special events that take place in Smash Run. They mentioned a similar thing from City Trial where characters like Dyna Blade would appear (having never played Kirby's Air Ride, I don't know how true that is).

True, but the actual clothes would have been neater.
Any way, I said before that I poorly worded my post. Pretend that the word "just" isn't there.
brawl in the family got a smash update
Today's update is a little weak because of the fact that if you look at the main site you get the idea that not only the Gunner, but the Swordsman Mii's weapons change depending on what outfit they wear. Hoodie Mac was an amazing reveal though, so it gets a pass. Plus for that awesome Rosalina color.
Seeing as she is using an alt color without it actually being pointed out in the commentary makes me wonder if they'll be showing off alt colors commonly from here on.
The Little Mac costume DOES give me hope that Dry Bowser might be a thing... however, I'm going to avoid getting my hopes up in that regard, remembering that the sweatshirt model was already rendered for Little Mac's intro animation. They could have been like "Wow, this looks cook, let's just leave it on sometimes".
HOWEVER however, I do believe they're putting a lot of love and effort into these two games, so if alternate costumes happen I'll be very pleased.
For some reason, it kinda seems like they're building up to the reveal of Wario, since he was the first character to get an alt costume.
I'm probably just reaching though.
