One of the things That never sat right with me was how Mega Man fans were so willing to toss Rock aside and accept Beck as their new Mega Man.
It would be like if Mario hadn't had a proper game in years right? Then Miyamoto started a Kickstarter game called Hyper McKelly Bros. about two Irish brothers who are repairmen and must save Queen Cake from Lord Phigg. And then everyone cheers for joy while I look on and feel odd.
I'm probably jumping to conclusions.
It's mostly because Capcom has either made questionable decisions with Mega Man games in the past, or just cancelled upcoming anticipated projects with little reason. MN9 is more or less a spiritual successor who may or may not just turn into Mega Man anyway.
As a huge fan of the series for most of my life, I don't really see this as turning away from him. MN9, as Guycott said the spiritual successor. This is what the majority of fans wanted, a proper MM game even if the real Mega Man isn't the star. It has its differences and such, but none are too far out of the realm of possibility to make it a believable Mega Man game if you just plopped him in there and tweaked a few of the art assets. I would love to see a "real" Mega Man game come out again, but let's face it Capcom is squandering him and throwing him away. It's great that he's in the next Smash Bros. and I hope this means better things for him the future, but as of now he's pretty low on Capcom's production priority list. Also the absolute slew of bullshit that Capcom is giving us with his name and face plastered on it is seeming to make fans embrace this spiritual successor because it's doing everything right, where Capcom is doing everything wrong (I mean come on, how many more mediocre to sub-par fan made games are they going to throw at us?)
The many different series of Megaman, like X, Zero and Battle Network, probably makes it easier to accept someone Megaman-esque as a proper Megaman. There is more than one, so having another doesn't mean abandoning the one. Mario on the other hand, Sonic's no different, has always been the one and only.

It's not so much about "tossing Rock" as it is showing Capcom that we don't want any of their shit.
A Megaman game about a guy that looks and plays like Megaman by the guy who made Megaman will still feel like a Megaman game, blue armor or not.
I'm not really sure what your point is.
Would I have preferred it if this didn't have to be a new series? Well, sure, I guess. But at the same time, Megaman Classic is a TIRED franchise which really does need a refresher (or to be killed off entirely, finally).
On that note, I'd be pretty pissed if Inafune decides to go the route of getting Capcom to publish this as a Megaman game. Going to Kickstarter and making 4 million dollars and then STILL taking publisher money to make the game into something else is a dick move.

My point was as a true fan of a franchise getting something that is like an expy is weird. If it looks like Mega Man, plays like Mega Man, and is by the guy who made Mega Man... shouldn't it be Mega Man? If it is almost exactly like something you love... but isn't, wouldn't that feel wrong? Like you lost your dog, but instead of looking for him, you go out and buy a replacement dog almost exactly like him.
I'm not really a Mega Man fan, but if something like this were to happen to Mario, I wouldn't exactly be pleased. Look at my Hyper McKelly Bros. comparison.
Besides fictional material never dies. If it gets old and tired it takes a break until it is revived and refreshed. Imagine if after that crappy Batman & Robin people said the Batman franchise sucks and then never made a new Batman movie again.
I'm a Mega Man fan, but I really don't want another regular MM game given that there's already been over a dozen and they're all pretty much the same thing, and I don't think any deviations from the established formula would be well-received unless it was a new subseries like X, Zero, and ZX, which MN9 may as well be considered anyway
Oh yes. Who wants to play the same kind of game all the time? Big complaint with the New Super Mario bros. series... yuck. I'm just talking about Mega Man-like games. Keep it fresh, but keep it Mega Man.
I think everyone's come to terms with the reality that Capcom is probably not going to do anything with Mega Man, and even if they do, it probably will not be good. I think fans feel so betrayed by and disillusioned with Capcom that they really don't mind ditching MM and going with Inafune's pseudo-MM, especially with his enthusiasm behind it. At the moment, the decision is basically "either accept this new character (who's got so much MM staff influence behind him that he may as well be a new Mega Man type), or don't have any Mega Man at all."
I'm personally not really excited for this game (I don't think it'll deviate enough from the formula I've played a bajillion times already so I really don't care), but I can understand why fans are so ready and willing to move on. They're probably surprised that they have anything to hope for at all: Mighty No. 9 is better than anything they would have expected from Capcom. Fans are so angry with Capcom that Inafune's rebelliousness seems to inspire togetherness among the community, rather than causing some sort of separation between MM fans and Beck fans.
