This reading of Dedede is somewhat inconsistent with the anime and modern games.
In general, Dedede comes across more as someone who is rather selfish and has a huge rivalry with Kirby, yet still makes some attempt at occasionally being responsible and adventurous. He comes across less as being anything like "evil," but is still selfish and vengeful.
Now, this might be more as a result of a change in directors; after all, Sakurai was less involved in these later projects than in the earlier ones (Dream Land style games not included) and was also in direct control of Brawl.
At the same time, Brawl doesn't necessarily contradict the anime and modern games either. After all, Dedede is known to be a great planner (even if, er, they depend a bit too much on monsters clobbering dat Kirby), so his master plans involving those badges in Brawl is similar to his other plans where he does something seemingly "evil" but turns out to not be later on (KA and potentially Dynablade). As for hugging Kirby, that could be similar to how Dedede sort of nods/waves at Kirby after Nightmare is defeated in KA (he's overjoyed that the true enemy was defeated long enough to not care too much about his rivalry).
lol that wasn't even the point of your post, was it
but that continuity seems pretty tenable either way
Just wait for Dreamland Hystoria guys

For the reasons you addressed, it's no surprise that DeDeDe is one of the most beloved and creative villains in video games. Sure, the first impression of DeDeDe is an ignorant jerk who delights in causing pain and suffering to various people, but once you get to know him, he's actually one of the sweetest, most caring individuals you'd ever meet. Even if he is aggressive, selfish, and not above getting revenge on anyone who wrongs him, actually taking the time to form a friendly bond with him and looking carefully at his "diabolical plots" would make you forget these vices. Besides, while DeDeDe likes the idea of triumphing over Kirby (whether it be in "Gourmet Race" or "Revenge of the King"), he would rather have Kirby as a pal and give him a huge hug! Plus, how many times has DeDeDe helped Kirby defeat another antagonist?
DeDeDe has always been a personal favorite of mine because he is misunderstood and is actually very nice if you're willing to get to know him better.

Geez, Kirby might have a full-blown aneurysm on the NA cover.

Or this:
Or how about something like this?
so excited for this game,
a fully 3d kirby that i can carry around with me. i know you can already do this with mario and soon zelda but fuck this is kirby ( not even counting smash bros 3ds )
so 11 January is the day i expect meta knight/king dedede/... waddle dee? to be announced for smash bros, maybe before that date even
i hope because this seems to be in the line of kirby superstar, the co-op helper system returns. not necessarily with the famous kirby cast playable like in return to dreamland. i would like to see that enemies are playable again as partners, and the rest of the cast as bosses/rivals/allies again
that would be cool, even cooler if the co-op play is available with download play, since i know that not that many people are really interested in buying actual kirby games
Some new magazine scans present a lot of new information and possibilities for the game, including new abilities:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/12...zine_scans
Important things of note:
- Kirby's new Bell power.
- The bug hat is allegedly called "Horn" ability and not Suplex. Unfortunately I don't know a lick of Japanese so I can't really confirm if this is true.
- There's a snapshot that looks like one of the Waddle Dee Trains is being derailed. Perhaps these can be attacked?
- Gyroscopic controls?
- Dedede is definitely appearing in the game, however it looks like he may be a playable character rather than the villain.
- Spawnable enemy-partners are back?! It's hard to tell exactly what's going on in that snapshot but it sure looks like it. The picture of Super Star's Yo-Yo Kirby sprite nearby seems to support this theory.
- Minigames based on Kirby Mass Attack? Also a minigame where you play as Dedede.
If anyone here can actually translate any of this I'd be super interested.
Dedede looking a bit weird there...

Thats no minigame. You can collect various keychains in the game related to Kirby's past adventures. Those Mass Attack sprites are a keychain.
Dedede's face looks a little like his Gba and DS appearances, mainly Superstar Ultra. I wonder if that is how he will appear in smash bros.
I hope not. I don't hate this design, but I'm super in love with his Brawl model.
