The rips on the site already of the main characters are incomplete: it's missing the greyed out versions and some other poses. I took the liberty to re-rip them directly from the ROM.
Mario
Luigi
Toad
Toadstool
All of the final characters' sprites were located in a remote part of the SMAS ROM, and in the SMB2 graphics area of said ROM are sets of unused graphics based on the NES versions:
Mario (Beta)
Luigi (Beta)
Toad (Beta)
Toadstool (Beta)
Notable differences from the final versions are that the small forms of each character have larger heads. The character select menu sprites are different as well (parts have more detail). Almost everything else is the same between the two sets besides the large form death sprites (which are technically unused in the final game, as there are no ways to die while large without immediately becoming small), except for Toadstool's sprites, which differ vastly compared to the final versions: especially her character select sprites being as horrifying as they are.
An overlooked addition to the final SMAS version is that the walking animations have 3 frames instead of the NES (and beta sprites') 2 frame animations. Also, the beta sprites appear to be somewhat unfinished; look at the "ducking while holding an item" pose of Mario's - his feet are unshaded.
