Actually the more I think about this the more I want it to happen. They already have a quadrupedal character in that wolf that Midna has. Do it. Dooo it.
Other than that...maybe Quill? Or Medli?
Even though Tetra is Zelda, I still think that Tetra would be an excellent choice for a playable character.
I'd definitely like to see Medli appear in some manner, perhaps with largely musical-based magic on her harp. Or maybe something light-related since she does a lot of light reflecting in Wind Waker, or earth related since she's the Sage of Earth.
I played this at a Nintendo event yesterday:
I found the game to be a little boring, to be totally honest. It feels like Dynasty Warriors more than I was really expecting, and it just seemed a little "go here, attack things with no struggle, go here, repeat." It looked nice, though a little stuttery and I caused a couple graphical errors with targeting but it's not finished yet.
Killing hordes in big ass swings is cool for 5 minutes, and then you just start to ignore about 95% of the enemies because they don't matter.
If you like Dynasty Warriors, you'll probably enjoy this.
I never played Dynasty Warriors, but I'm still kind of excited for this game nonetheless.

Seriously though, Dynasty Warriors games just click very well with me. Granted, I don't buy EVERY game in the series, because it is quite redundant, but every now and then I buy stuff when it adds to the formula, or just features characters I'd love to play as. For example, I ate up the Gundam series of DW games. DWG3 is one of my favorite in the whole DW series, but Hyrule Warriors looks like it will be a close contender.
I just really really REALLY wish I had full assurance that the roster will be bigger than it appears in that screenshot I posted. Granted, I'm expecting less than a typical DW game (which averages like... 60 or 70 characters it seems like), but I'd be sad if it was super small.
Lana and Agitha have been officially confirmed at the website, by the way.
EDIT: Oh, and Zant has also been confirmed as an NPC, Bridge of Eldin is a stage, TP Link and TP Zelda are DLC and Lana and Midna fight each other at some point.
(At this point I'm 95% sure Lana is Nayru in some form...C'mon, defensive magic, books, blue hair...)
LET'S GET THE AGITHA HYPE TRAIN ROLLING AWWW YEAH

Lana.
Nayru.
Lanayru.
Sounds legit.

Seriously? That's very unfortunate considering how he was portrayed in the game he came from. Not only does his personality brilliantly shifts from acting serious to downright hilariously insane, but also he's no slouch at combat! Also, considering all the wild, over the top attacks the playable characters have, Zant's tendency to mimic the bosses would have been a perfect fit!
I assume he will be an enemy: they're just using NPC to mean he isn't playable.
Point taken, but it would be a neat idea of some of the baddies are unlockable playable characters.

So does this mean we'll also get an Eldi and a Faro/Aron to match? With red and green motifs, respectively, of course.

This is why I liked the DW Gundam series. Everything down to the simple machines like Ball and Zakus were playable. The main exceptions were giant mechs, which tended to only be bosses, or to be summons.

my current theory is Lana is the 'powerful witch' or whatever that Cia is "Shia, The Black Witch; An evil witch, who had her good soul chased out of her by dark forces"
Nayru sounds plausible too but who knows
The official description for Lana:
Lana is sorceress with a deep knowledge of spells, monsters, and using spells on monsters. She’s very energetic and ready to give the war for Hyrule everything she’s got.
Lana and Cia have an unspoken hostility, even beyond the normal anger that war brings out. Lana is fiercely determined to put a halt to Cia’s plans, even at the cost of her own life or happiness.
Don’t underestimate Lana just because she’s usually so optimistic! Her natural athletic energy serves her well and allows her to quickly dive around her enemies and attack with her book of sorcery, which utilizes electrifying spells that her enemies never see coming.
While searching for the Gate of Souls, Lana takes a detour to rescue Agitha from a horde of monsters, ultimately recruiting her to the greater cause.
Nothing really new here, except for the thing about the Gate of Souls.
