x1:
These were built with Mario World's tilesets in mind, but I may have to shave a few pixels off Yoshi's head for him to fit. I'm also still working out how I want Mario to look.
These are really nice (especially the pipes, wow) but I noticed a few things:
~The top of Yoshi's nose on the first frame has banding.
~The upper jaw of Baby Yoshi's mouth on the first frame seems to have too much shading, but this could just be personal opinion.
~Can't really tell that the Fire Flower and Mushrooms have eyes unless you look in close (the Mushrooms suffer less from this than the Fire Flower, however), though I'm not sure how much you can do about that in the Fire Flower's case.
~The wing's second plume has a jaggy at the tip.
~The top-most outline on Mario and Luigi's hats are a bit blocky/flat-edged, and the same goes for Mario's (our) left arm/wrist. In fact it actually gives the impression of an elbow, thus making Mario's forearm appear really short.
Hopefully that helps!
Yeah, thanks for the quick input man! Here are some revisions:
I also cleaned up some pixels on the diagonal pipe. Do you think Mario's arms should be longer?
Removing the white inside of the Fire Flower helps readability, I think. Personally, I can see the eyes on the mushroom sprites just fine, but I'm willing to take suggestions
I think that Mario, being shorter than Luigi, can do with shorter arms, myself. Seems to flow well with his physique.
The Fire Flower does look better, and for the Mushrooms, as I said they were the most readable of the items, so they should be fine. Perhaps adding a pixel of highlight on the eyes of all of them would help?
ooh this could make for a great tilehack man
do your sprites each have under 16, 32-bit colors ?
Yeah, each sprite is 16 colors or under. I'm not sure about the exact palettes themselves, but I hear the SNES is pretty versatile when it comes to that.
The first thing I'm noticing is how amazing these are. Wow.
Mario's hands look small to me, but that's up to you. Super Mario's idle legs look odd; his background leg looks a bit fatter than the other and his legs are at the wrong perspective when compared to his upper body. Same goes for Super Luigi. I can't identify any problems with Yoshi at all. Mario and Luigi's arms look a bit like noodles at some points and their arms seem short.
Thanks for the advice, Quotient. I'm glad you like them!
Mario's small hands were a tile limitation. I originally had them
bigger, but had to shrink them so he'd fit.
Also, both legs are three pixels wide, so they are indeed the same width. I'll see what I can do about the perspective though.
In other news, I finished most of the basic Mario World moves.
Some sprites are placeholder, and I'm working on inserting them into the ROM. Once they're in I can see how they play then make changes accordingly.
Small mari looks like is looking to the ground, id shuffle the pixels on his face tomake himlook forward a little more
yes papa...
Also, due to some tileset limitations, I had to change Yoshi around.
Left is new
Got suggestions?
i dont think gors meant moving the entire eye to the right, but rather messing with the iris pixels to convey a different look direction
also it feels like he's leaning forward quite a bit
as for the yoshi its too bad cause the right on the right has more charm even though they're both great
could you try enlarging his eyes though to see what its like ?
Looking pretty good! I messed around with the clusters, trying to reduce the number of single pixels:
I'm looking forward to more! n_n
I changed small mario to show what i mean, also
idk why big mario has this purple for iris and small single pixels around the sprite. so i removed it and changed it for the blue in his overalls
on top of that i reworked his legs to reduce ambiguity, now the forward leg is shaded to look like it's farther from us.
The only issue I'd see with making the eye shading and glove shading the same as the overalls blue is that with a Fire Flower palette applied, it might make Mario look funky (moreso in the eyes than the gloves IMO).
