Since you guys are mentioning it, I am fond of this place myself. I didn't used to like it because I felt like I wasn't getting the respect I was looking for and I felt like I was starting to make people dislike me; however, after a bit of work and some encouragement in late 2013, I now feel like I've been on this site for my entire online life.
Not only is most of the community nice and they are willing to respect me, but they also know what they are talking about to give me the right push to improve my craft. I never felt this involved with not even the communities of Lemmy's Land and Smack Jeeves, so I'm glad I have a place I have no qualms about staying for the rest of my online life.
I joined when I idolized Tosh (Fossil) and found out he came to these forums back when we were Pixeltendo. Joined Expresso Chop solely because he started it as well. Helped form Love Krew out of sheer circumstance. Became internet forum terrorist. Reformed. Stayed.
I used to love browsing the custom sprites, and I learned a lot from the C+C. People would occasionally post good art references, and those definitely helped me learn a lot. I didn't have any art friends growing up or anything, so I didn't know what types of resources were out there or how you could learn properly.
I lurked for a long time and then finally posted because my friend wouldn't stop insisting that one of my sprites was really bad. I didn't understand why, so I wanted to get some feedback. I felt more curiosity than shame, despite how ravenously he was making fun of me, so I thought that meant I was probably ready for the harsher environment that this place had at the time.
I guess now I pretty much stay for the few friends I've made here. Every once in awhile people post interesting stuff, and I like that, but...to be honest, there isn't nearly as much fun art, and a lot of the other discussions don't really stimulate me.
Started off deciding that I was into sprite comics, which then caused me to create shitty recolor characters. I then decided to try to make more custom sprites, and then I joined Pixeltendo because oh hey everyone made sprites!!
And that's why I'm here. Continuation from Pixeltendo~
Originally, I joined Pixeltendo because I had started getting into pixelart after finding Sonic Advance sprites. Socializing has never been my forte exactly, and I didn't take criticism all that well so I wasn't a very notable member.
I joined VGR because after years of lurking the forums, it had become evident that activity was dying down. I figured I might as well do what I could to help it get more active, so here we are. I'm not sure if I can learn much more here, but I'm always open to opportunities to improve.
i was redirected here from either the Luminous Arc board on GameFAQs or a L'Arc fanboard i used to frequent, i forget what motivated me to stay though
shitposting, from the looks of how many threads are locked on my thread history!

I discovered this a good while back when I was looking for Puggsy sprites. I came back to admire then a couple more times, but was disappointed with the lack of them, so I figured I'd register and give ripping them a shot. After a bit of a bumpy start and with some help from the community I got going, and I essentially got hooked on ripping sprites.
I have to say this has really had a big impact on me. The existence of the Sound Resource caused me to make VGSC, and subsequently I created other programs that people may find useful, which has given me great programming experience and motivation. Trying to extract and convert certain file types (for myself and others) has also caused me to learn about understanding and using binary data, as well as looking at files in hex editors (which has proved to be pretty useful and generally neat to be able to do). This in turn has made me learn a considerable amount about image and audio formats in general, and how a lot of these things work.
So yeah, VGR has really caused me to learn a lot, and do a lot. I also love the community, the members are awesome and I can consider a number of them as real friends. The discussions that happen can also be really interesting though, and if it's something I have an opinion on it's great to write about it somewhere that's relevant.
It's amazing, I never knew this place was called Pixeltendo before hand.
Quite the history indeed.
When I saw this place, it was TSR, and man this place was at the top of the game for having sprite resources.
Back when sprite flash animations were really popular, I would browse these forums to inspire myself, and look up references to self study. That was like 07-09 or something.
I joined in 2010, but felt the community was pretty harsh at the time. Some of the "C+C" that came from people, and directed towards newer "spriters" was complete garbage.
I mean I know most people start off pretty slow, with like edits and recolors, but boy back then, people would tear new butt holes for no reason, and leave nothing to even "C+C" about. =/
Now, from what I've seen, its not soo bad. And I kind of like it that way, cause when people post up honest sprites that they would like feedback on. It makes VGR grow into something better. Not something toxic.
why tsr? I ask myself that everyday.

I am actually much better in pixel art than I am to hand drawing. Hands and feet are my weakest points, dynamic poses and animation are still somewhat of a new territory to me even to this rate. That is why I use references a lot, maybe too much.
There are no problems in using references a lot. Theres no such thing as using refs too much.
You are an artist, you want to do your best, and if you seek for ref, then this means you are legit concerned in doing the best. References arent handicaps for lousy artists, artists ref all the time, why do you think there are stuff like nude drawing, still life..? Hell, even pro game designers reference all the time. To make GTA5, artists actually walked around cities taking pics to be used as textures and model references, and it is a really solid artwork.
Again, references shall never be disencouraged. It is not art cheating. Like when you work on a job, you arent hired out of expectations that you have answers for questions on the tip of your tongue. Knowing where to find the answer, dynamically, instead of relying just on repetition memory is a better ability to have.
Also im here to dish out walls of text like these

uh - i'm not really sure why i'm still on TSR, to be 100% brutally honest.
i started out on Pixeltendo (which hosted TSR's business, I guess you could say) when a friend of mine, Nystre, told me to sign up because "we need more cool people like you to post" (serious, those where his actual words) I was pretty good friends with Nystre then, so I accepted. Back then, it was a pretty solid community; Tyvon was like this king of cool and his friend 1up was somewhere around the same; there was a cynical, sarcastic poster who kept the community in check, despite the fact that they were usually right (who you'd all know as "Zeemort" later on) and the cutest lil spriter (des)
and Vipershark was the butt of every joke ): but I didn't think that Vipershark would literally become one of VGR's greatest posters. waht - anyway
so, I became literally friends with everyone because the community was cool. Also, Dazz allegedly had sex with the girl from LazyTown and
everyone believed him.
(i know i still do)
Years later; the forum's original owner (bacon???) up and left (got a life) forcing Dazz to make The Spriter's Resource forums. It was cool for awhile, I guess - I was mod of one forum, then promoted to super mod, then to tech admin. It was cool.
Then all my friends from PT left, and this forum has literally become PT all over again. ):
...but yeah - literally all of my friends left. Aside from Chad and des coming back (hey buddies - Chad's right; LoveKrew used to terrorize PT regularly but they were just a bunch of chaotic-neutral folk who can actually art pretty fuckin well - chad too!), they're pretty much all gone...former administration included.
Now it's just me. And my new friends. :')
But I miss my old friends. )':
TL;DR i am a forum grandpa from generations ago
i'm sorta like koopaul but not 100% there yet
and spooky stuff, i can't believe i'm quoting heath ledger's joker here but "you either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain" -- i'm starting to feel like that applies to me :I
jesus christ
TSR made me a lot more liberal, so I come back every so often because I'm grateful or something, I don't know.
TFR plays a big role in my visits, too
