Pure black and pure white are ill-advised in game sprites because of transparency issues; but I agree with what you're saying for the most part.

Well, if not pure black, then a different near-black color. As long as it's the same althroughout, because of aa issues wrt the background.

Where's his mouth? It was in the original sprites.
