Or you could just buy the 3DS version of the game, no hacking required.

Seriously though, I think the nunchuck controls in that game are actually pretty great. The wiimote alone is bullshit, but with the nunchuck it feels and works really good. It's even my preferred way of playing the sequel.

Yeah why not buy a game you already have for different controls?

It's not like my idea is simple and free.

If you don't have it though then disregard that, the 3ds version is fine unless you want a bigger screen.
wELL

the 3ds one is portable!!!! oh who am I kidding, the controls in both new DKC games are shit, portable or not, Ocarina hacks or not. Not gonna lie, but the controls. They're garbage.
Like really, I'm OK with DK controlling like a big ape. I'm okay with only controlling only one character. I'm okay with animal buddies gimping my jump and I'm okay with Diddy's jetpack being shit. What I can't stand are the godawful controls. I get they had to save space on a wiimote-only layout, but it's like they picked the worst possible ways to go about it. Koopaul can probably vouch for me here, even. Everything is completely clusterfucked, especially TF's Pro control scheme.

DKC 1-3:
B: Jump
Y: Hold to run, pick up barrel (while next to barrel), roll (while standing, or tap while moving)
Down + Y: Ground pound
A: Switch characters (DKC1) Teamup/Animal buddy special ability (2, 3)
X: Dismount animal buddy
Select: Switch characters

DKCR 3DS:
A/B: Jump (hold to jump higher, tap to hop)
X/Y: Ground pound, roll (while moving), blow air (while ducking), charge (with Rambi)
L/R: Grab items/Dismount animal buddy

TF Pro Controller:
Move stick: Walk
Tap stick and hold: Run
B: Jump, tap again in air to use assist Kong ability
A: That screen-clearing ability I think?
Y: Ground pound/roll (while moving)
R (or is it ZR?): Grab and throw items, pluck items, climb (must hold near climbable surface)
(I know there's an alternate control scheme, but it just makes things even stranger. It'd have worked if it was the Classic Controller, not the Pro)

These new controls are awful. It's even worse on a Wii remote scheme due to the waggle controls when you've gotta do things like roll.
First off, using a shoulder button to grab and toss items is just awkward given how often the player has to use it. It'd make more sense to assign all the "R-button" abilities to the Y button and delegate ground-pounding to Down+Y again. It's REALLY not that hard to tap that same button while in motion to roll. It's physically possible for players to do now just as you could then, and also it'd have been way doable with picking up items if you're within proximity of them.

Also why is there a button press required to grab vines. Why
I've had so many bullshit deaths because I realize afterward that I needed to hold a button to cling to vines that really should've been automatic. It's...weird; it's as if the game's difficulty doesn't revolve around the level design and obstacles, it revolves on how absolutely awful it is to control DK himself. Half the time I'm dying for absolutely little reason other than that I'm trying to use the traditional DKC controls to control my character who isn't responding at all like he is in the original. Why even bother putting "Country" in the title at this point if it doesn't even feel like the same game.

I have, and thank you muchly. Honestly had more fun playing my ripped game through Dolphin than I did fighting with the waggle controls, but Dolphin has its own quirks... maybe now I can finally enjoy this thing.

Mine is the classic and the set-up is more like DKC

Y is run, B is jump, D-pad is walk... I'll play it again tommorrow so I can tell you all of them...

some people dont like being told constantly about things. the best way to get people interested is by playing the game in their face rather than telling them about it.

To my friend who loves Fire Emblem: Code Name S.T.E.A.M.

I told him it's made by the same team and is a turn based strategy game.

To my friend who loves action games: The Wonderful 101

I told him its an insanely action packed game made by the same guy who did Viewtiful Joe!

I showed them footage and talked about them... they kinda shrugged. I think the reason is simple. They're new and different. People don't want to bother trying new and different things, and if they do, they don't even give them much of a chance.

Anyway on to the the DKC discussion. I admit the motion controls are shit of course but besides that I don't see a problem. The trigger buttons to grab things is rather neat. It gives you the sensation you are gripping on to and holding something. When you're gripping for dear life to that grass above you while the ground is being destroyed? It's quite a sensation. I guess that's what they were trying with the motion controls too, but in a game that requires precise timing, a waggle may kill you.

Everything seemed fine in Tropical Freeze though.
Codename Steam doesn't have any similarities with Fire Emblem besides genre... in terms of tone, style, and fundamental gameplay, it's a totally different game and that could very easily turn some people off. I know that the perspective they chose to utilize is not at all advantageous for a turn-based strategy game, which can basically work as a board game.

And Wonderful 101 doesn't have all that much in common with Viewtiful Joe from a gameplay perspective.

I'm not trying to insinuate anything, but from your example you don't really understand why your friends like the games they do (or I assume you would have mentioned it), only that they do like those games. Maybe your one friend likes Fire Emblem for the waifu and the medieval fantasy and the Chess-like gameplay. Maybe your other friend likes Viewtiful Joe for the intense sidescrolling action.

"It's basically Valkyria Chronicles with XCOM's overwatch ability...If you liked either game, you'll probably love Codename Steam. Okay it's more like Fire Emblem if it was an FPS. Plus it's got these ridiculous characters based on 19th century American literature. It's something completely different from Fire Emblem though but that's not entirely a bad thing. Plus you can unlock Fire Emblem characters using amiibo, for a completely different way to play that pretty much apes the permadeath from FE"

"Alright it's a game by the creator by Bayonetta and you control a bunch of superheroes to stop alien invaders, and your characters turn into the weapons or tools that they need to complete each stage. It's basically if Okami and Bayonetta had a baby. Oh yeah, and like other Platinum Games titles the boss battles and absolutely INSANE. I think there's a demo up on for it on the eShop, actually."
Valkyria Chronicles has its own overwatch feature that's already more like Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.'s (in that it's point and wait) with the difference being that STEAM's is tied to resources while VC's is just "keep shooting at them as long as you can see them"
I guess its similarity to X-Com's overwatch is that units pause while an overwatch is active; note that this feature is barely important in X-Com, but due to the possibility of being stunned by overwatch in STEAM, it's far more deadly there

I'd say STEAM is more like Valkyria Chronicles in general, but with a slightly higher emphasis on stealth (since avoiding enemy overwatches is way more important here), more AP/steam management (since AP is used for both movement AND shooting, instead of just movement), and X-Com's squad size (and maybe its plot a tiny bit, too, lol). And then, of course, its story is... well, its story.

In a nutshell, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is a turn-based third-person-shooter with strategy and stealth elements, set in a steam punk world featuring Abraham Lincoln, zany 1800s literary characters, and Lovecraftian monsters in a golden age of comics artstyle.

I'm sad at how poorly it sold, but not surprised, considering it's aimed at several different niches at once.

Sooooooooo uh, awkwaaaard
After a few weeks of New SMB U, I popped in Tropical Freeze and suddenly, the Pro Controller inputs don't seem that bad. I wish they would've just put the grab commands on the same buttons you use to ground-pound and roll. The D-Pad configuration is too strange for me, though and I can't handle it )':

But yeah, after weeks of dealing with NSMBU's shit DKCTF feels a little better and it's easier to gauge DK's movements now...though once again, it feels like Dixie Kong outclasses the other two Kong assists, to the point that if I lose Dixie it's damn near pointless to keep exploring the stage :/
Yeah... Dixie for life.
Even though I have yet to enjoy Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (I have the game, but I'm a bit too busy to play it), I'm at least aware of how useless Diddy Kong is in that game. Sure, Cranky gets some time in the spotlight now and then, but much like how she is in in DKC2, Dixie outclasses her own boyfriend.

Hm, what do you think those nuts on Tumblr would think of that?

Why is this always being brought up in this day and age?  It's the devs choice to have something like that or not.
I have a female friend who is a hardcore Zelda fan and not because Link is a girl.
He isn't, is he? Or she?
Let them weep! Those babies seem to have forgotton that the majority of the character selection in Hyrule Warriors is female. Oh, but they have boobs. FOR SHAME!!!
The reason given for not having female characters in Triforce Heroes was pretty stupid, but it was probably the only thing that came to his mind other than "because fuck you that's the way we made it".

It's ridiculous how much more outrage porn gaming journalism has generated in recent months, especially over petty shit.
