Basically what I'm saying is, the diffuse textures are bland, and I wouldn't know how to go about making them look as they do in game; However, Turbo and RatchetMario have the Photoshop skills and know-how to do that. On top of that, Turbo knows how to turn the 06 world space normal maps into tangent normal maps. I read his tutorial for them, but I don't have enough confidence to try it out. (I would just submit the normal maps as-is, but the lord above knows that tangent normal maps are much more useful...)
Here are some examples, though: (Sonic's diffuse and his normal map, respectively)

It's pretty much why most ports of 06 Sonic end up being awkwardly light blue like Classic Sonic for some reason: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkNqopACjxQ

While we're on the topic of Sonic '06 ripping, would it be possible to rip the Goal Ring model from that? I ask since '06 was the last appearance of the Heroes-style Goal Ring before Unleashed gave it an aesthetic overhaul.

Alternate way you can also turns space normal maps to normal map with XNormal or Handplane. Mine is still very unstable for some models to generate the correctly normal map for some reason.

Handplane looks like a godsend. Simple, easy to use, and freeware... I'm gonna give it a try for my intended use (Gen-6 pokémon models), and if it works, I'll make sure to say something.
Edit: Hmmm... doesn't seem to want to work well with the Electabuzz map I'm trying it with.
