The checkered background's really clashing with the fool, it's overall quite busy. The back of the card is looking good!
Paladin: needs more refining, especially around the legs/feet. It isn't bad, just needs more work.

Axed the BG, removed most of the dithering, and shifted pixels here and there

I nade a test with dithered checked pattern and thicker white outline around the character
just an idea, idk if it looks good myself

I'm in the process of editing a Street Fighter 2-style version of Akuma's F+MP chop that he gained in Street Fighter Alpha for use in my Mugen conversion. First frame's pretty much done:
The first three frames correspond to the first three frames of Ryu's F+MP overhead punch which he did have in SSF2T, so for those I just have to redo the arm and add the touches that differentiate Akuma (head, beads, frayed gi, sandals). The last two frames are posed differently though, so for those i'll just work straight from the Street Fighter Alpha sprites and modify the proportions and shading and such.

@Gors My checkerboard in the original image was at first nearly identical to yours, although with a smaller outline, but I made it solid just before I saved it
I think it looks quite nice with that BG, thanks
EDIT
Another BG attempt?
maybe I should move into a separate thread, I hate bogging down general threads like this

@everyone helping me
I know right? It seems like I might have to increase color count because this BG dance is getting tiresome.
I don't really have any reason for the tiny palette anyway aside from the fact that I wanted to; the original palette was straight black and white.
I suppose I'll have to settle for readability over aesthetic.. :/
Thanks everyone, I'll try with a slightly larger palette
EDIT
Increased the color count by 2, brings the palette up to 5, excluding canvas
Not sure If its getting any better, but I'm feeling happier about it
EDIT EDIT
Alternate palette attempt

Perhaps a 1px outline on some of the outlines will help with the readability now.
Using 12 colours from the Amstrad CPC's palette.

Hey, that looks pretty great! I've always been a fan of the bright ol' CPC palette. But that green? Maybe you could...or maybe...uhhh...
(suddenly reminded why the Amstrad CPC palette is so difficult to use)
Well, that's just about the best I could do. At least it's a shade closer to the skin color. :/

Thanks for the edit! It's a shade closer to flesh, but it is too bright imo, which is why I went down a shade to use the yellow as a highlight.
If I had switched the pink for the red or the mid-blue, I'd have a more regular increase in brightness in the palette, but on the other hand the colour will be completely off and perhaps even lack a bit of contrast.
