I'm diggin' these NES Smash sprites! No joke, when I was a kid my friends tried to convince me that there was a Smash on the NES, and I always thought that it would had been pretty cool.
I think that Mach Rider and Ballon Fighter would be a pretty cool addition.
I'm sure you are aware of the many characters from Smash that you haven't made yet from the late 80s that would fit nicely into this, and of course, there are the many AT in the Smash series from NES games like Takamaru, Devil from Devil World, and Excitebike.
If you really want some obscure characters in there throw in some Gumshoe and a little Urban Champion!
Can't wait to see what else you make!

You know, that's the first time I ever heard of Gumshoe. When I looked it up, this is one of the things I've found.
I'm getting some serious Earthbound/Mother vibes after looking at this image. Maybe you could make battle portraits for some of these characters, including King Dom?

I also did an old-school Donkey Kong, since he didn't get his modern design until Donkey Kong Country.
what are you talking about that is cranky kong when he is still in his prime mate
*Prime Ape
<smartass>I think you missed the pun there, good sir. "Mate" is often meant as "friend", and is commonly found at the end of sentences. The word "primate" is used for describing apes, monkeys, and humans. So "in his prime, mate" sounds like "in his primate".
Also, Primeape is a pokemon.</smartass>
In regards to the sprite, I think the heads are just a bit too angular, and could do with some rounding.

Okay, Peach is really bothering me. I think the eyes are what's bothering me. The solid shape just doesn't seem to work. Maybe use the light pink shade to add pupils? I don't know. Something is just really bothering me.

Between college, this project and redoing some Zelda Classic sprites, I'm worn out for today. Here's Pit and Ninten along with all of the corrections everyone has suggested so far:
P.S. Ninten is the Villager of Super Smash Bros Duel, if you know what I mean. D8
Done! Nice simple fix and I can see the difference.
Heh, thanks for the enthusiasm! I'll definitely add these guys to my to-do list. So far, I have about 27 guys planned, though I might call this project finished before all of those are done.

Personally, I feel straight horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines work best in low-res sprites. I've been experimenting a lot with more octagonal shapes lately in an attempt to make my designs more crisp. Nevertheless, I went back and smoothed out some shapes a little bit.

\le sigh
I really wanted to keep all of the eyes the same to unify everyone stylistically, but it seems like that's holding me back a bit. I went ahead and tweaked Peach's eyes, along with everyone else.

The pixel behind Mario and Luigi's eyes make them look kind of sad. Also, Peach looks pretty bored, which doesn't fit well with the whole fighting game thing.

I tried to help with an edit. I gave most of them pupils and Peach a little bit more expression. It looks a little weird, I know but hopefully it helps. If your trying to keep consistent, I don't think block eyes work the best for Peach...

OK! With all of the main characters out of the way, we can finally start digging into some of the more obscure ones. I might go back and do some more Mario/Zelda/Kirby/Mother characters, but for now I'd like to focus on some of the lesser-known guys.
For this update, we've got Little Mac, Duck Hunt, R.O.B., Game & Watch, Ice Climbers, Balloon Fighter and Mac Rider. I've also gone back and touched up a few designs and changed some eyes per-request. It's amazing how moving just a pixel can change a character, isn't it?

Bowser's body seems too fat/thick, the gray on R.O.B. also makes him look a bit dark. Otherwise, these look really cool!

I'd recommend making Little Mac's blue darker and changing the green from the duck to a magenta.

Are pig ganon and dedede in the running as two more big characters
Also im just gonna say that the Mario Luigi Bowser/ Donkey Kong look like they could be in there own stand alone fighting game, as well as the Ice Climbers being there own platformer

Indeedy they are! They're a little low on my priorities list, though, as I'd like to draw some characters that aren't in existing Smash Bros games first. Any suggestions? Anything developed and published by Nintendo is up for grabs.

Devil from Devil World, Hogan Badguy something from Urban Champion never played so I don't know
And honestly The Viruses from Doctor Mario, either as a trio, or pallets for each other. ID REALLY LIKE THIS ONE!
Im rambaling now but Dr. Mario fist fighting with the Viruses in NES style would be amazing
EDIT, also just curious if Yoshi or Wario because or warios woods

The Dr. Mario Viruses as a trio?!? Excellent idea! I'll totally be doing that one and Dr. Mario, since the latter would be an easy edit. Devil is very, very high priority. He's the next character I was going to draw after I finish Tamagon, in fact.
I originally wanted to put the upper limit of characters to 1989, but that would mean excluding Kirby sooo...Yeah. Yoshi and Wario are possible characters, but very low-priority because they were super-obscure as far as NES characters go and they're already in existing Smash games.
