That made me want to give the thief from Final Fantasy 1 NES a shot.

Mario's hand should be angled up a little. It looks like his wrist is bent funny that way. Also, don't be afraid to change the shape of some things a bit. As was said before, they look that way because of size limitations; so long as the dimensions remain scaled properly, it's OK to change things within the bounding box. For instance, make Mario's eyes bigger, and maybe shrink is belly a bit and show the arm and leg on the other side.
This looked better while I was working on it. Oh well.
I had actually thought about doing GBC Pokemon sprites myself, lol. From G/S/C. Looks pretty decent, but I feel like it could definitely be improved further, by referencing the official artwork of Red (for that generation).
And to go along with Pik's Ninten sprite, here's a 4x interpretation of the Guitar Man from MOTHER 1!
I always thought his design was quite absurd until I realized I was looking at his back sprite, and the "face" was actually the guitar on his back.
Oh well, too late to unsee that now!
That guy will make for one heck of an indie-game protagonist, so I'd call that a happy accident.
What a weird kid...
If this actually were a competition, Pik would have just won.
SORRY GUYS, WE HAVE AN OBVIOUS WINNER *sarcasm*
...Anyways, made Mario thinner and such things.

I like it. The only thing that looks weird is the angle of the foot in the back. Shouldn't it be facing forward, since this is a walk sprite? Also, his more revealed eye could use a bit of shine~
Now I wanna see a remaster of Wario Land 3 like that ;.;. WL3 has color~
His expression is brilliant
My games' hi-res modes are only x2 resolutions, since hi-res uses double animation frames and requires the game to be running at 60 fps because of that, so...that's why I'm mostly using that scale. But all the other stuff still applies =).
For the toon characters, I make their eyes bigger by a pixel, bigger hands and give them thicker eyebrows for maximum cuteness and expressionism~
/\ this sprite is bad, however, because it still obeys the original unresized sprite a little too much: it's still got a blocky pose even in the high res, and there is too much banding going on.
