A game stylized to look like a five year old drew it might be interesting.
What would look really terrible is mismatching sprites. If all the sprites are consistant in a scribbly way then it actually look okay.

If I had a quarter for every sprite comic, fan game, and Flash animation that suffers from that, I'd build my own money bin to swim in my wealth.

This is why sprite based characters, objects and stages in Smash Bros. usually bug the hell out of me. Why the fuck does the Pac Land stage exist? It's hideous!
And it's wierd how some things stay 8-Bit while others get a 3D model makeover. The Wrecking Crew stage is all 3D while Pac-Land stays in it's ugly form.
I can understand them keeping something 8-Bit if it's iconic. The 3DS Pac-Maze stage makes sense to keep like that since everyone recognizes that location. I could say the same about the 75m stage.

I also hate when I see mismatch scaling. You know, where some things look x1 resolution, while others look x2, x3 or x4 resolution.

I love how Wrecking Crew looks. It's perfectly translated to quality 3D, while being recognizable. The 3DS Pac-Maze stage should've been Pac Man's stage on both platforms, especially with the massively iconic maze on the background in its Omega form. Seriously, way more people know Pac Man more than Pac Land, let alone the ones who play it on console. Bla bla gimmick that only works on 3DS bla bla, neither Gaur Plains nor Wily's Castle are technically the same on both platforms.
Metal Face isn't on 3DS at the moment, so that is technically different.
I agree that Pac-maze should be on both platforms, though. I do understand the reasoning of having unique screens displaying the ghosts differently, but I doubt anyone would criticize that visual dynamic being lost in exchange for Wii U inclusion.
