Hey guys,
I've begun to notice more and more that games are cropping up from the adult genre on the site, and I'm wondering if we should implement a proper NSFW system on the site. I'm not sure how we'd go about doing this yet so I'd like to see some of your ideas.
As this site has a policy of not restricting content for users that aren't registered, I'm not sure how we should go about keeping the content from being seen by a younger audience. My main idea would be a cookie being implemented that would remove the NSFW filter from displaying. Where is sheet is normally displayed, if marked as NSFW, we have a notice saying the content has been marked, and in order to see it the user must click an additional button before it's displayed for download or viewing.
Not all adult titles are exclusively adult. As a result I don't think this filter should apply to games, but only to sheets.
Perhaps the best method of implementing this would be a check to see if the sheet has been tagged as NSFW using the new tagging system that is being worked on?
Should we have a genre exclusively for these games too?
Let us know what you think.
I know of five ways to deal with this...
1) not at all
2) the "click to confirm" approach
3) so called "age verification" using the listed birth date of a user
4) using personal information like credit card numbers
5) ban everything
Option one yields to parents and teachers seeing you as a menace for exposing their innocent little angels to "corruption".
Options two and three are easily circumvented.
Option four will create feelings of distrust and suspicion.
Option five is probably going to piss-off a certain number of users.
I don't recommend anything beyond the account-based age verification.
But also bare in mind if you go anywhere within the realm of age verification, how far are you willing to go with enforcing it, and would the restrictions against certain NSFW content be at all changed?
Depending how far you go on restrictions for viewing the content, the kind of content you allow to be submitted needs to be balanced against that.
In your position, i'd go with either the click to confirm button or banning NSFW altogether.
Putting stuff under another genre/category does kind of make sense. A warning, though, you're making the content actually a bit easier to access by doing that. I already learned when discovering there's some NSFW stuff on this site, that searching "NSFW" tends to find a lot of those sheets. Putting ALL NSFW under its own category would definitely make this even easier.
Another thing with restricting such content is better explained with some of the artifacts we have in real life. There are certain depictions/representations of gods, godesses, and other iconic figures, that are naked. Not necessarily intended in a sexual way. Even so, some people saw the need to censor them, and a few of these artifacts were essentially vandalized. Now, while games and sheets with this content wouldn't be destroyed, they could be blocked from instant access. This normally wouldn't be an issue, but if an otherwise "SFW" game or sheet got classified as NSFW simply because it had one naked chick too many, then there is a bit of a problem.
I'm not implying you're planning to take any extreme measures here, just saying be careful with whatever decision or choices you make, and with a subject like this, there is absolutely no pleasing everyone.
p.s.
What exactly is the limit of NSFW material here?
I'm still not completely sure, as I don't recall finding any specific guidelines about it.

That sounds ideal, and I think that's how most websites do it.
Mods would just need to make sure that tag is on there before accepting it, because you know not everyone is going to remember to tag it as such.
I personally think the tagging system should be sufficient. Any NSFW sheet (and only NSFW sheets) should be tagged NSFW anyway, so a separate way of specifying it isn't necessary.
The "age verification" thing where you input a date of birth is possible, then again they don't really do much beyond requiring people to make a few extra clicks. A button needing to be clicked is just simpler and isn't any less secure. I do think that a checkbox should be available along with the button though, something like "don't show this warning again" or whatever. If checked a cookie can be stored, but if left unchecked then it shows up every time (even if people click the button), for those who are using a shared computer or just want to view that specific sheet but avoid NSFW in general.
I think there should also be an option for registered users, so that you can, for example, have the warning disabled while logged in but have it active when not.
In any case, I think such a filter is a good idea. I also agree that it should only apply to sheets, however games should also be able to be tagged NSFW (if most or all of its sheets are NSFW).
I'm with Puggsoy on every point here. My concern isn't whether it's easy to get through - if somebody wants to view the content they're going to find a way to view either which way. We can put in measures to mean only registered users can view it, but all we'll get is users registering to view it and it'll be irritating for everyone involved. Since we don't have paid accounts to join, it's not exactly going to benefit us to have a bunch of one-off accounts that never post. Statistics on registered users isn't anything of benefit to us as opposed to most sites.
I think a simple button with a check box is the best way. People will just lie about their age if we put in drop downs, and it's just cumbersome. Petie will be in charge of implementing this so it's likely that we'll need to have him go over the method of keeping a cookie with the check box, but I'm sure we can easily implement a simple option on user profiles to ignore the process all together at the same time.
You can always put an extra page before accessing the sheet as a NSFW disclaimer. Something like "Are you 18 years old? y/n" prompt - most NSFW sites do that.
Or, you can lock these contents to those who aren't members. idk. People will always find a way for tits, so anything too cumbersome or protective would be moot.
I'm all for something like this. Pretty sure there are rips from hentai games here. And we also have rips from the Leisure Suit Larry series.
My second most popular rip is
this, and it's no surprise why either. The only visible tits on it are from an unused girl who commits seppuku.
So, are we talking something like Know Your Meme's system where gallery images are given a preview with a character covering their eyes and the "NSFW" symbol? That always seemed like a good way to go about things if you ask me.
No icons on this site contain NSFW content. I've always made sure of that. As a result there is no reason to falsify what would be contained in the sheet in this fashion. Icons will be displayed normally.

yeah, although i don't think i've seen any of the...erm... 'hardcore' ones here, yet...
What I've seen here is pretty soft as opposed to visiting the adult or mature section of NG, and some other gaming sites. Pretty sure a lot of those games, or at least the bulk of their content is NOT allowed here, right?
I see why that rip would be popular. lol!

yep
or sites that happen to have NSFW. I wouldn't classify NG as strictly NSFW, tho. It just happens to have a lot of that material! xD
That option already sounds like a bit of an unnecessary complication. It's not any more or any less secure than the "are you 18?" prompt. However, it is an annoyance to your visitors. IDK how many, but it would make some people mad if they have to register just to view some NSFW rips. If this approach was taken, account-based age verification may as well be used, and that is pointless as someone can just put-in a birthdate that says they're 18. I have come across one or two sites that used this approach, and I didn't appreciate needing an account just to view certain content.
That's everything, for now.
I think that a cookie-based age verification is enough. Something certainly is needed though. The site attracts a lot of kids.
I just wonder, when we are talking about NSFW just how much NSFW are we talking about?
I'm all for more pixelated boobs on the site, but on the other hand I don't want the floodgates to be opened to endless "CG Sets" and stuff like that.
