Your sprites don't give really off the impression that Mario's made of metal. He just looks like gray Mario.

Whenever you're delving into conveying different materials in art it's always important to consider how light will affect the look of your object. In this situation, given that Metal Mario is obviously made of metal, his body should reflect light in a very specific way, whereas it currently appears dull.

Here is a quick example of what I'm getting at:

Keep in mind that there are tutorials for practically everything, so in situations like this if you simply search up "pixel art metal tutorial" this was one of the first images to pop up and it gives you a better visual understanding of what this kind of thing should look like:
