I'd be more impressed if it were done without refs and if it were more dynamic.

Working without refs isn't clever.

However working with a ref and copying outright is just as baddddd.

I don't entirely agree with that: with a bit of practice with refs and the character in mind, you can go on to draw without refs.
But I agree, working first without refs isn't smart.
