Currently, there is no style. It's what I've been trying my hardest to invent myself. The only thing we have in stone is

- Playercharacters have 8-way movement, NPCs have the diagonals.
- Character sprites (Pokémon notwithstanding) can be no taller than the sprite we just posted.

The team is anxious to see what you guys can come up with, so any attempts to help out will be appreciated. There is a degree of quality control though, I don't think they'd accept someone worse than I am.
You know, for the sake of keeping the project afloat I suggest you heavily rethink the sprite-style. Really; don't try so hard to emulate the guy's concept drawings.
For one, resize the characters down to 32px height for overworlds. You can scale up using an algorithm similar to Scale2x.
In battle, you can try for the sprite size you have now so it's high-res but try not to overdo it because it's going to be as hard as hell to sprite all 493 equips. - meaning like, keep the player character's directions to iso-4 and have an idling 4~6 frames for the player characters MAX. And maybe minimal frames that can be looped for attacks. Otherwise, you're never gonna get this done. :I
Even still, in-battle I'd suggest 64px height chibi characters with a 32 (or 64) color limit.
Otherwise, you and the spriters are gonna be killin' yourselves.

Game concept still is amazingly sweet - it's kind of a bummer though you're doing this with Pokemon and not coming up with your own beasts, because this is dojingame-quality work. >:
Why don't you use the style from pokemon ranger?

And is everyone in it a girl? I thought gold was a boy... and PLEASE make some male characters, um, how about red, or lucas?

Well, his art looks a little on the female-ish side...

do your overworlds in an edited (washed out?) Ranger style.
the current one is too huge and most likely won't be done
Maybe just a tad bit more complex than Ranger. But yeah, I love this idea.

Something Disgaea size should work out though, I suppose.
A Disgaea sprite size might be a good go but I think you can go slightly bigger, just not as big as the next sprite. You'll have more room to get the right amount of coloring and shading in there to get good quality.
go for disgaea character style overworlds, and make HQ sprites for turn-based battles :V
