stop shading just to shade. you've got a gradient going on in every section of the clothes, you're paying attention to lightsource, but you're not paying attention to what you're shading (you wouldn't shade a circle like you would shade a square for instance)
you need to pay attention to what it would ACTUALLY look like, and you've got a huge ref right there so i'm not really sure how you've still got the gradient thing going on tbh
Put simply, shade according to shape and lightsource.
Anyway, I still see improvement.
The ear of the smaller Mario doesnt have a clear and visible outline. Does not have ot be black but put something there because it makes it look unfinished.
Like this? Also Put in the light source in Mario, so you know where the light is coming from.
You should know where the light source is without a misplaced circle shows.
Anyways, you are still shading for hte sake of shading, and there are incositencies with the shading. His hair is shaded from the right, his mouth and cheek from the right, his nose from nowhere it seems, his shirt and hat from a side lightsource, and everything else from top left.
The shading on his cap bill is a perfect example of shading just to shade. It is a slightly curved shape, but you just try to shade regardless of the shape. It should be mostly the light red colour with a bit of the second shade on the edges, maybe more on the side opposite of the light source.
Hmmm...
The bill is getting better, but the shading is also supposed to define the shape. Right now the bill looks jagged, not smooth. But the rest of the hat is getting better.

You need more shadow underneath the cap and further back. It's looking good.

Eh Chris, hows that? bump
Either lower the contrast between the two darker shades of beige or add an intermediate shade. I'm saying this because the shadow underneath his cap seems rather light. Light and shadow are quite intense here because of the proximity of the lightsource.
I was gone for a while, sorry but here!!!!
Look carefully at the shadows underneath the 'stache and then the lightsource: you sure about that?
