Actually, you have to pay for a lot of things like that. Steam is a good example. I personally think that its worth paying for anyway.

Considering you have to sign up in order to use the gold version of the service, and they specifically state that it costs money, it's definitely with the consent of the Xbox Live subscriber that Microsoft charges for the use of a gold account. Besides, you can use almost all the services of Xbox Live except online multiplayer without paying for the Xbox Live service as a whole. (Using a silver account, which has no monthly fee) Most downloadable content for games obviously costs money, and the same goes for the Wii:



The vast majority of Xbox 360 games have some sort of online capabilites, whether it be online multiplayer or downloadable content; the same cannot be said for most Wii games. This makes the use of Xbox Live a much more integral part of the gaming experience when it comes to the Xbox 360 as opposed to the online features of the Wii, therefore some might say the gold version of the Xbox Live service is worth paying for. The choice lies entirely with you; if you think it's worth the money, pay the monthly fee, and if you don't think it's worth it, then don't. No one is forcing you to do anything against your will. I've owned both of these consoles since their respective releases in my country, so I speak from experience.

besides making freinds and inviting them to your house to play and share moments together will always be free.

I bought Gold just around the time when I got the Orange Box. I bought a year-long subscription, which at £40, is a pretty reasonable price.

I keep thinking "I never use it, so I won't renew it" and then I play Soul Calibur IV or Street Fighter IV again.
